Thanksgiving with the BF. Questions

Since the board is slow, I guess I will post about my Thanksgiving plans and get opinions.

My oldest dog is not doing too well (she is in chronic renal failure) so I opted to not make the 5 hour drive north to see my family. I told Mom that she and her new husband are welcome to come to my place and have Thanksgiving here.  I recently moved into a new apartment that is AWESOME! I would like for her to see it and I would also like for her to meet the BF before we head up there for our marathon in 24 days...

So, Mom arrives on Wednesday night (the BF's birthday), we're going to have dinner and they are going to their hotel.  Thanksgiving Day, I told Mom I would be cooking, but I am not a good cook. The BF said he would help me (he loves to cook) but I began to think... it would probably cost the same amount if I took them to a Thanksgiving Buffet that a Hilton Hotel is putting together. It would be less stress/work for me and the BF AND it is closer to Mom's hotel.

On the other hand, I think it might actually be kinda fun to cook T-day dinner with the BF. He cooks for me every night (well, I have cooked for him once, I didn't let him help at all) but the last month or so, I have been helping him and he has been giving me more and more jobs to do! So, I must be getting better.

ANYWAY, what would you do? Would you cook or just take the 'rents out to dinner?

We plan on going out later anyway to watch the Dallas Cowboy game.

Re: Thanksgiving with the BF. Questions

  • I would cook.  Make the traditional foods you or Mr Kayak like to make, and call it a day.  I prefer to have a nice relaxing day at home or at a loved one's home rather than going out.

  • I would cook. I  don't believe in holidays at a restaurant.  If she's coming from so far away she should get a home cooked meal on T-day.

We do easy stuff like turkey, cranberry sauce (10 mins), Pillsbury biscuits, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and call it a day.  There is never anything green on our T-day table

  • I would probably cook too.  For me, T-day is one of the days that I like to have a home cooked meal.  That and Christmas.  I think just about every other holiday I'm fine with eating out.

  • That answers that!  Guess I will be cooking!  EEK! That's kinda scary! LOL

  • I would cook.  I think it would be fun for you and the BF to cook together.

Also I have issues going to resturants/stores on Thanksgiving.  Those people more then likely want to be at home with their family, not at work cooking for yours.

I would cook! Your mom can come over and help, and it's a more relaxed environment to get to know your wonderful BF.

  • I too would cook.  But here's the thing- it doesn't have to be complicated.  You don't have to do a full turkey if you don't want.  Just get a turkey breast, for example.

For Thanksgiving I always make mashed potatoes from scratch, but I'll tell you that Bob Evans makes some GOOD pre-made mashed potatoes that you can buy in most stores.  My mom now gets that for Christmas dinner to make it a little easier.

  • I'd cook at home, but I love cooking for people and feeding them.  It's just not the same going out.  Smile
  • My answer is flameful because I would hate going out to eat for Thanksgiving, but I also can't cook. So I'd be like, hey mom... wanna help us cook (read: do most of it)? :)

But I guess cooking with MrK would be good, too. As long as I'm not responsible for it all by myself, haha.

  • Cook, so your dog can spend Thanksgiving with you, too.

LOL!! She has already mentioned helping me. Smile I love her stuffing, so I might ask her to do that. Hopefully, I will be able to do everything else.

  • I would have to agree. Nothing like a home cooked holiday meal.

  • I would cook because it is a great bonding experience for you and your cooking partner.

I always cook TGing with my mom and I love it. I also loke cooking with my BF... though it doesn't happen often cause my kitchen is tiny and one of us has to hang out with DD.
