Favorite basic crochet patterns?

I'm fairly new to the world of crocheting.  After mastering basic scarves I'm being ambitious and working on a blanket for my friend's baby due in March. (A blanket is just a giant scarf right? Haha.) I'm using a single crochet stitch and I managed to figure out how to switch colors so I'm doing 3 rows of each color before switching.  It's actually turning out really well!!  It's cream and pale green stripes based on the nursery colors.

So...all that said, I want to "graduate" to something a little more advanced.  Any ideas? I'd love to tackle some mittens but I'm not sure how hard they are to crochet.  Husband mentioned he would love a hat.

I'm open to any and all ideas.  :-)

Thanks!

Re: Favorite basic crochet patterns?

  • I think you're ready for either something crocheted flat that you need to learn increases or decreases for, or something in the round like a hat or mittens.

Ravelry's patterns can be sorted by how easy they are, so I'd give that a shot and see what you find.

  • Just comb through Ravelry and see what strikes your fancy.  I also like LionBrand's site because they also have difficulty ratings and reviews by people who have tried the pattern, but most of LionBrand's patterns are also on Ravelry.

  • You could hop on youtube and watch a beanie hat tutorial. Give that a whirl! :) Also a great place to learn different stitches.
