Re: Paterno

  • Glad he's out. McQueary's next.
  • I'm glad they fired him and I think it's ridiculous that students were rioting last night. In a couple of years I bet they'll look back at that and think they were idiots.

I don't understand being so wrapped up in team/school love that you negate the welfare of so many young children. The things Sandusky did are unspeakable and everyone involved needs to be fired and some need to see jail time.

  • I admit I haven't followed this super closely, so I may not have my "facts" straight.  From what I understand, it is unclear exactly what he was told or knew about and he did report something to his boss?  If he did know the severity of what was happening, OF COURSE, he should have reported to the authorities and in that case I do agree with the firing.  If all he knew was there was suspicious activity and he didn't know what, and he did report to his boss.........then, I think it stinks that his legacy of a career is being shadowed by this.  Of course, the crime is disgusting and I absolutely hate that it went on for so long and is just NOW having anything done about it.  But, IF JoePa didn't actually know, then this situation stinks to be effecting him.  If he did, he's a dirty old man and should go down too.
  • I think given the circumstances, it needed to be done. Like Dollfinn mentioned though, I would need to know exactly what was told to him and how much he really knew before I decide how guilty and disgusting he is.

Also, what if McQueary said he wouldn't speak to police? I see how it could be a sticky situation to go to police about something you just heard (but didn't see yourself) especially if you don't know details and the person who did witness it didn't want to talk. Thats some pretty heavy allegations. I can see (although it's still poor judgement) how he would have just reported it to the people above him and then left it in their hands to handle a further investigation. So many people in this situation failed those poor boys.

Also, WTF is with the announcement that just came out that McQueary will still be allowed to coach on Saturday? If Paterno is guilty of wrongdoing here, McQueary most definitely is! That's a bunch of BS. He was not a child when he witnessed the raping of a young boy, he was a grown man. His ass should have been throwing punches to break it up. He makes me sick.

  • They - Spanier, Curly, Shultz, Paterno, McQueary - should all be fired...and worse.
  • It says in the report that McQuery saw the victim and Sandusky in the act and they saw him. All he did was call his dad and his dad told him to tell Paterno. IMO, the dad should go down with McQuery and Paterno too. The fact that they all didn't go to the actual city police is appalling.

There are so many things in that Grand Jury report that get a big WTF from me. For example, the fact that a case was closed and no charges were filed after it was clear that he was showering with a boy!

I know, the amount of coverup that went on for so long is insane. So many people are involved with this and no one did the right thing. WTF

  • Apparently now there are also rumors coming out insinuating that Second Mile & Sandusky were pimping out young boys to rich donors. God I hope this is just a rumor....

The victims have already doubled. I fear there is still so much more to this case.

ETA: I literally get sick thinking about that poor boy seeing McQueary. Think about the glimmer of hope he must have had thinking that someone would come to his rescue and then the devastation when he just walked away. It breaks my heart.

  • I agree with all of you ladies that all involved should be fired, not to mention some of them charged with conspiracy to cover up the horrible acts aof Sandusky.  Also, how could all of those men who knew just keep working with Sandusky day in and day out?  This just makes me so sick to my stomach.

If you read the grand jury report, it's obvious that Paterno (along with Curley, Spanier and Schultz - who knows who else) not only knew what Sandusky was doing but they essentially enabled it for years. DECADES. There is no excusing this. Period.

Believe what you want, but at absolute MINIMUM Joe Paterno knew that Jerry Sandusky was in the shower naked with a 10 year old and still allowed him full and unquestioned access to those showers for at least nine YEARS after that. That people are still defending him and using endearing nicknames makes me absolutely sick.

I agree & I'm not defending anyone because there is absolutely nothing to defend here, they are all guilty, but isn't it mentioned in the Grand Jury Report that his locker room keys were taken away shortly after the incident that McQueary & Paterno reported? It's still sick because of course by not being arrested he was able to molest them in other places. There are just so many more people that need to be brought down & while Joe absutely had to go, it's seriously questionable by the school that McQueary didn't go first, or at least at the same time.

  • Gotcha, I didn't know that much was out there and known.  I certainly wasn't trying to make excuses or defend him.  I was just saying "if".  But, that's not the case, so clearly I'm on the firing side.  And worse, he and all involved should be held accountable for sure.

I don't even understand mentioning this as what, an excuse? I don't know what.  Just don't rape little boys on our campus, Sandusky. WTF.

In 1998-99 the school and Paterno knew Sandusky had acted inappropriately with at least one child, bear-hugging him naked, front to back in the school showers.  His locker room keys were taken away (excuse me while I laugh bitterly at that 'punishment') in 2002.

I think her rant was probably more directed at the idiots that are likely posting all over FB, then you. :) I actually have morons posting crap like "Joe Pa got robbed" "We are Joe Pa! We love Joe Pa!" WTF. then there are the people that think he should have been allowed to retire. Really? He didn't act honorably, why should he be granted the option of leaving honorably. I need to hide these people.

Per the grand jury report, McQueary was told that Sandusky had his keys taken away. It's unlikely that this actually happened as Sandusky has been a consistent fixture in that gym and on campus and has been working out there for years and as recently as last week according to some reports.

I clearly said it wasn't an excuse. It was mentioned because LB said he was given full access after they knew for like 9 yrs. Also....I was asking. As in,"did I read that in the report?" I didn't remember. If you read the rest of what I wrote it's pretty obvious that wasn't a defense.

My "rant" (like it's out of line? To get worked up about this? Hmm) was directed at anyone who comes close to defending the enabling of a child rapist.

Too little too late in my opinion.  Like I said, Penn State was already aware of inappropriate showering by Sandusky and a little boy back in 1998.  And LB is correct in that despite having had his keys 'taken away' he still had access and visited the gym frequently and as recently as last week per news reports.

Rant doesn't mean it's a bad thing or that you were not justified in being upset. I think we're all ranting. I think Dollfinn made it pretty clear that she wasn't defending anyone and that she just didn't have all of the info and I was just saying that your anger probably is towards all of the people who actually are defending all of these asses. We all agree here. I don't understand where the arguments are coming from.

ETA: I also read an abridged version of the Grand Jury Report, so I'm actually enjoying (well that's probably not the right word) reading the extra details you have.

I agree. I assure you, I was just asking because I couldn't remember what I read, not because I think taking his keys away would have magically made everything else ok. I was thinking the timeline out in my head and just asking for clarity.

I also agree that a lot of things were probably said that didn't actually occur...like not actually taking his keys away. This cover up runs long and deep. I think they've just scratched the surface.

My neighbor and I got into a discussion last night. She went to Penn State and truly believes he should have been allowed to finish coaching this season. WTF? I feel like he is lucky if getting fired is all his 'punishment' will consist of. How did this man sleep at night? It makes me ill, just thinking about it.

  • I'm fuzzy on details of what exactly happened, but anyone who knew he was raping little boys and didn't report it to authorities immediately deserves to be fired and thrown in jail. Imagine how many boys could have been spared if Paterno had turned him years ago.
