Introduction

Hello! My name is Marni and, thanks to the US military, I will soon be an International Nestie.

This is not something that my DH (who is the service member) and I ever expected, but we are embracing the impending experience and hoping to make the most of it! We will be moving to Germany with our toddler and our Boston Terrier in early 2012. Because of limited housing on base, we expect to live in one of the nearby cities or towns. At first, this scared me (DH will be headed off on his own super fun adventure shortly after we get settled, if you catch my drift), but now that I've had some time to get used to the idea, I'm excited.

I am equal parts thrilled and terrified about our move. Any tips and suggestions to get through the actual move are appreciated.

Re: Introduction

  • Hi and welcome. I'm a Brit married to a Luxembourgish guy with a Lux-brit DD.

Where will you be stationed? There are a number of girls on here in Germany and I'm not too far from one of the bases in Germany, maybe you'll get lucky and be nearby!

  • We will be near Frankfurt.

I have been in touch with Ilumine, as a military spouse in Germany, she's provided a lot of invaluable information.

My LO is a wonderful traveler, so even when DH is off doing his own thing, I plan to venture out with my side kick.

I will, after the LO goes to bed. I don't know how to post pictures from my iPad (and if I go down to the basement to the desktop, LO will demand to join me. . . And well, the basement is not toddler-proofed). Do you have a Bostie?

  • I think you will enjoy Germany. Even living off the base you won't be too far I'm sure. You can enjoy the German city/village life but still run to the base for company and groceries! My German DH and I just got back from living a year in Z?rich. Now we live in Chicago. But we spent time visiting DH's family and I always enjoyed the area. Not so much in Switzerland since things ran so funny there.

Yes, Parenting after 35! We used to live is Southern California, so your location sticks in my head. (We were at Fort Irwin, which is very, very, very far away from where you are, but still SoCal! LOL).

I don't know, yet, if we'll have access to Taco Bell and/or Diet Mountain Dew, but if we do, I'll set up a bedroom for you!

I have not made it down to the computer yet, I'm sorry--please don't hold it against me! I've got a cold and my ILs are in town, so our schedule is a bit off and my normal "me time" is, well, not normal. I will start a new thread with a few pictures for you.

  • Welcome to the board.  We were outside of Frankfurt for 3 years and moved back this summer.  DH is an Army civilian.  It was a great experience, hard at times, but definitely worth it.
