Dr. Somer-Shely & Other OBs Question

So I have a friend that just founf out that she is pregnant and wants an ultrasound pic to tell her family with on Christmas. I suggested she go see Dr Somer-Shely after some of you told me about her and I had a great experience (only TTC for now) so just Gyno stuff but still great!

Anyway, my question is do any of you that have seen her remember when she suggests the first ultrasound? If you haven't seen her, when does your Dr typically order an US?

Re: Dr. Somer-Shely & Other OBs Question

  • I see Taggert.  I'm not sure if this is typical but I had one at 5 weeks, 8 wks, 9 wks, and 20 wks.  I know the 5 week one is typical for her though.
  • Unless there is a medical reason to do an ultrasound earlier, Dr Somer-Shely typically only does the 20 week ultrasound.

  • I don't see her, but my doc typically does only one around 20-22 weeks.

I had a chemical pregnancy before DS and some bleeding with DS, so I ended up having several. Which I don't believe is typical unless you have complications or have had complication.

  • I see Dr. Shely and with my first one I had some bleeding so I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks.  With my second one I didn't have any issues but still had an ultrasound at 7 weeks to confirm the pregnancy and get an accurate date.  I was told they were starting to do the first ultrasound on a more regular basis to get accurate dates unless the woman had very accurate dating.  I had been on mirena prior to the 2nd one and got pregnant right away so was pretty off on accuracy as far as dates went.

  • My OB (Dr. Kruszka) does one at the first visit. (I was 10 weeks because I was with the RE, but the receptionist said he does one at every patient's first PG visit).

  • I don't see her either but my doctor typically does one at the first appt for dating and the anatomy scan.

With my history I've had several first trimester ultrasounds each time but that's not normal.

  • I just saw her for the first time last Friday.  She didnt do an ultrasound (but I was certain on my dates), just the heartbeat.  Kind of a disapointment, since at my last doctor I think I had like 4-5 total, but.. what do you do!  I really liked her.

  • Dr's Nabity, Bossert, Simmons and Pearsall do an ultrasound at 11 wks 6 days-13 wks 6 days. Again at 20 weeks. And again at 32 weeks.

Just a thought unless she's insisting on seeing Dr Somer-Shely.

(I personally wouldn't recommend Dr Nabity or Dr Pearsall, but she may feel differently about them)

  • With my first, I only had the 20 week.  With this one, my cycles were all whacky, so they did one at the 8 week to date it, then my second one again at 20 weeks.
  • I see Dr Nabity and have had at least 4 u/s with each pg.  Usually the first is at the 1st appt- around 8w, the next is the NT scan at 12w, 20w and again around 32w or 34w.  Last year at this time I was pg and needed the reassurance that baby was healthy before telling family at Christmas so I called the week before Christmas and asked for a quick scan (I was 10 almost 11w, had already had a scan at 7w).  They fit me right in.

  • Awesome! Thanks for all the info. You girls are great!
