New Orleans help

I'm thinking about going to the Imaging USA convention in January.  It's at the convention center... what area should i choose if i go the priceline route?

Also, any quaint outta the way places I should look into?  I want to be within easy walking distance to the convention center, I'm not 100% sure if I'll be driving or flying.  THANKS : )

Re: New Orleans help

  • For easy walking, stick to the warehouse district. It's pretty much all the stuff just west of the convention center, on the opposite side of Canal from the FQ. I have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn by the convention center. Both are right across the street, and while not quaint, they're convenient. I've pretty much walked from one end of town to the other numerous times, so I don't always turn a place down just because it's not right by the convention center.

How outta the way are you thinking? Like uptown/garden district out of the way?

  • i don't have an answer to that question, but do yourself a favor and eat at Cochon!

  • i don't have a good working knowledge of New Orleans, the  only time i've beent here was for a fraternity formal when i was 21.  and most of that time was spent either drinking or babysitting my super drunk date, hooray.

according to the convention website, the marriott, embassy suites, doubletree, spring hill suites, and hampton are sold out.

i don't have a problem walking, but i'll be attending a class 9-5 for the first three days (kill me NOW) so i can take an exam-- so i am planning to room by myself so nobody annoys me while i'm trying to study.  close-ish would be nice but i'll take what i can get.

  • Check the Renaissance (I think it's on Julia). It's nearby.

And yes, go to cochon! I haven't been to the original restaurant since right after it opened, but I have had lunch at cochon butcher a few times. Yummy!

  • I had a conference at the convention center in March. DO NOT stay at Hotel New Orleans. It was on the list of hotels we had and right across from the center, but it was horrible.
  • If you change your mind and want a "quiet" roommate, message me. I'm thinking about going this year.
  • The Westin is close to the DoubleTree, so you may look there.  I haven't been to the Convention Center, so I'm not sure how far the walk is.

The Whitney on Poydras may be an option.  There are two Renaissance hotels - so make sure you're getting the one closer to the convention center.

I think there is a Residence Inn not too far away.

Looking at a map, I've stayed on Poydras a few times and walked to the opposite side of the Quarter.  It seems far coming back (maybe the booze?) but it really didn't feel that far.  So I think anything along Poydras, or maybe Canal closer to Harrah's wouldn't be that bad either.

that would be a long walk. I would stick to Canal closer to Harrah's or the warehouse district.

  • I went to a conference there...oh man, it was a long time ago.  Didn't realize how long until now.  15 years!

Anyway, I stayed on Poydras at Le Pavillon.  It was a bit of a walk, but not bad.  Maybe 15 minutes? But they also had a shuttle, so the distance wasn't really an issue. That would be something to inquire about wherever you're booking.  Le Pavillon was a really nice hotel.  Maybe more than you're wanting to spend, but if you feel like indulging in a swank place, I'd definitely recommend it.

if you don't snore or smack, i'm in...lol.  i'm not 100% sure i'm going, but i'd really like to take the CPP exam.  they have a class (it's before the convention) that's 3 days long, and at the end you sit for the exam.  i absolutely love the imaging usa tradeshow.  it's HUGE and you can touch/feel/see stuff you've only met online... last year it was in san antonio, and i stopped by on my way to austin for a shoot.  this is when i decided i didn't love the kelly moore bags as much as i thought i did...lol

  • I used to put my company's out of town employees up at the Ambassador (http://www.neworleansboutiquehotels.com/ambassador/) on Tchoup. (We recently moved locations so I don't use them anymore, otherwise I would.) The hotel is fine and the prices are good. It's a very short walk to the Convention Center from there. Otherwise, I'd stay at the W on Poydras or Harrah's.

For the hours that you'll be walking, it would be a nice stroll in the morning and evening. I agree that hotels along Canal close to the river would be fine, too. Even those in the Quarter closer to Canal/River would be fine. Have fun!

  • One more rec: The Saint James Hotel. It's a cute, quaint little place. Stayed there a couple times years back. I'd recommend it, too.

A lot of rooms here have exposed brick in the rooms, so I'll go by location to see if this helps. It's on Magazine closer to Poydras than Canal. It's about 2-3 blocks off Canal and then 3 or so blocks up to Bourbon Street. www.saintjameshotel.com
