Not SO related - Winter formal dress

As part of my transition to single living, I've been keeping up with activities with the 20's and 30's group from my local area and a winter formal is coming up. About 50 of us will go to a very formal restaurant and then head over to a Christmas in the Park event that is across the street.  Christmas in the Park is basically looking at hundreds of decorated trees and enjoying yummy snacks.  The invite basically says for the ladies to get out their formal dresses and the men to get out their tuxes.

My stbxh would never do anything close to above and would never see him anything outside of jeans/shorts (except wedding day).  I think it will be fun and no pressure because all are going as a group and as friends, not a dating event.

I need help with getting a dress.  I've never been good with fashion but would like to change that as I transform into my new single self.  I have no idea where to start.  Does anyone know of a good website (friendly budget too).  I guess I am looking for something that is fun, maybe even a little bit sassy and nothing too sexy or too low of a cut as I want to enjoy moving around it freely and to be able to enjoy the park.

Not sure if it matters, I am age 35.  I don't want to dress too young but I don't want to dress matronly or too safe either.

  • JC Penney is very budget-friendly (they're always having a sale!), and they have some nice dresses.
  • That sounds like so much fun! And good for you for getting out there and participating in something like that.

I've always had good luck with dresses at a department store like Macy's.

    Oooh, I forgot about Penney's!

Also, is there a higher-end consignment store in your area at all? We have one where I live, and while it's not super-cheap, the dresses are considerably less expensive than they would be to purchase new.

We do, since we are in a high cost of living area and Silcon Vallley, it can get pretty pricey.  It is worth checking out.  I will have to do some shopping around.  I will post pic or links of dresses that I am interested in and get your feedback.  I feel like a teenager going to the prom!

  • I have a couple of nice dresses from TJMaxx, for real. But they don't have floor-length ones nearly as often. Do you want it to be floor-length?

I think this sounds fun! Yes

Ditto this! I am going to a wedding tonight and I bought 2 dresses from JCP b/c I loved them both so much and I got them ridiculously on sale, got both for $58 with tax. I am wearing one tonight to the wedding and one to my agency holiday party

I have no idea if I want floor length or not.  I am not sure what would be considered too formal and not formal enough lol!

I do have Macy's near by but not so sure about JCP.  I will find out.

If you'er going to a park afterwards, I personally wouldn't wear floor-length--wouldn't want the hem dragging through dirt and grass.  Unless you can stay on paved paths all the time, in which case, go for it!  Grass would also make heels difficult....

I was wondering about the park, too. Sounds like a kind of awkward activity to wear a fancy floor-length gown for!

If I were you, OP, I'd find a short or knee-length dress that's pretty fancy and has some kind of wow factor :) The material of the dress helps a lot in determining "fanciness" too, so you don't have to go long to be formal!

Plus you can wear some awesome heels! How fun! Can't wait to see what you end up with!!

The park has swirley pavement trails all around.  But I think I may avoid the long dresses anyways.  I want to be able to slip in flats in case my feet hurts from walking and also the thought of being overdressed scares me lol.

  • These days you can wear almost any length for formal.  I just went to a "black tie" wedding, wore a dressy short dress, and it was very appropriate.  I wouldn't stress about length.  Get a dress that you feel amazing in and you'll look radiant!

  • I was looking for a dress last weekend and my aunt introduced me to DressBarn.

Found exactly what I was looking for to wear to a wedding this weekend.

  • I agree with JC Penney.  I just got the dress I'm wearing to my aunt's night wedding their not too long ago.  Its perfect for the holiday's too - the bodice is red with black lace over it.
