Mammo update

Sooo I was not taking no for an answer, so after more phone calls and trying to understand the underground world of medical billing and coding...I got my insurance company to cover it!!!  Appointment made two weeks from today!  YIPPEEEE!!

ETA: for those of you that were wondering...I was told the routine mammo was around $350.  I know it's important, but I'd rather not pay $350 when I work for health insurance :(

  • Nevermind I updated myself with your post below - I am in the same boat as you that the concerns were with my Mom and my Aunt - my Grandma is in remission and my Great Aunt died of BC - they still don't consider me high-risk and able to have a covered mammo until I'm 35 because my Mom doesn't "technically" have BC.

    How did you fight for it? I didn't know you could fight over things like that with a health insurance company!!

  • Yay!  I am so glad you were finally able to convince your insurance company that this is necessary and they should pay for it.

    BTW...I have a shirt that says "Fight Like a Girl" on it and I love it.  I get so many compliments on it whenever I wear it.

    Jeni, the recommendation is to start your mammo's 10 years before your family member was diagnosed.  In my case, my mom was 41, therefore I am starting now at 31.  How old was your grandma when she was diagnosed?

    Basically, I made phone calls to all the radiology places around here to find out the billing "diagnosis code" (this indicates family history) and "procedure code" (which indicates routine mammo vs. followup mammo).  I called my insurance company and asked them if they would approve the claim if it was billed with these codes.  I know, I have a headache too.  But it seemed to work.  My doctor is also going to submit a note to my Insurance co. to indicate that I am high-risk and that this was her recommendation (to go along with the Rx that I already have).

     

  • That's crazy that you even had to worry about it getting covered... glad it all worked out!  Though I think I missed an earlier post --- I hope nothing's wrong (aren't you too young to go for these regularly??)!

    ETA: Ah, now I see (started this post a while ago and just got back to it to click send).  Good for you for being proactive!  And I hear you on the headaches... we are still grappling with some insurance coding issues surrounding labor and delivery for me and Milo.  Ugh.

  • I'm glad they are covering it for you! I can't believe that insurance companies are so out of the loop when it comes to proper diagnostic testing! So glad I don't write life or health!
