Lots of us are part of a new global trend
Re: Lots of us are part of a new global trend
So...we're all mail order brides now?
I kid, I kid, but the article was heavily focused on Asian whatever-the-PC-term-for-mail-order-brides-is.
Passport whores? Visa whores?
Our nanny was all freaked out the other day, a Chinese friend of hers in N. Ireland just murdered her husband. 51 year old white Irish man, 28 year old Chinese woman. She has 2 kids in China, and a boyfriend in N. Ireland. Knife to the back. Our nanny is just realizing now that she may have married him for a visa, and he married her for a sex/maid bot.
In China it was just vile. Older western men would be covered in doting young Chinese women, often prompted by their families to hang out at the foreigner bars to find a husband that would marry them and take them to the west. Then they would bring over their family, and divorce the guy.
The whole thing was just sleazy as all hell, and people jokingly called it "yellow fever". Ick ick ick.
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

Whoa. I hope that as China becomes more rich (and let's face it, the US and Western Europe starts to slide downhill) and the gap isn't as big, there won't be a reason for this type of thing to happen as much anymore.
Unfortunately it's not just in China. I saw it all the time in Vietnam and Cambodia.
I remember one expat in VN who married a girl, gave her everything, even bought her a home and a restaurant. He went away on business, when he came home, the locks had been changed on both the house and resto and he was shlt out of luck, everything was in her name as foreigners can't buy there.
I also do know a lot of foreigner men and Vietnamese girl marriages/relationships that are legit and they really do love each other.
In the article mentioning about Vietnamese girls getting married to Taiwanese and Korean men, I remember reading a lot of articles about this warning the girls of abuse and pretty much slavery once they are in their husband's county. The girls go there after hardly knowing the men and some of the agencies offer some language courses, but not nearly enough to get by in their new country, let alone to be confident enough to ask for help if it's needed.
