Would you serve alcohol at a baby shower?

We're planning to serve punch, but we also thought about serving something spiked.

If you would serve an alcoholic beverage what would you serve? If it helps, the shower is at 2:00 in the afternoon.  We're thinking of serving a little cocktail and would love something neutral or maybe something blue themed.  Thoughts?

Re: Would you serve alcohol at a baby shower?

  • Try googling cocktails or punch recipes using blue curacoa.
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • I said "sure why not" because most of my close friends are boozehounds so it would fit our culture.

But if my MIL were coming I would not want booze served at my shower.

How does the mom-to-be feel?  I think traditionally it has been seen as inappropriate because it is for the mom and moms aren't supposed to drink (much) when pregnant.

If the mom-to-be feels it would be ok, then I would go with a Blue Curacao drink recipe.  Here is a whole list: http://www.drinksmixer.com/cat/2416/

ETA - if you haven't had Bue Curacao it is a mild orangy flavor but mostly used in fruity drinks to add color.  This drink sounds awesome because it should be a creamy blue and should taste like an orange dipped in white chocolate, and since it is liqueurs it shouldn't be too strong.  (Note white chocolate dipped oranges  could also be a super cute food element to add to the table - put blue food coloring in the white chocolate and you'd have some blue and orange chocolate covered fruit!  Wish I would have thought of this when hosting a shower for a boy, or for Red Dahlia's shower using strawberries for reddish pink/blue!)

    Erin's Sweater recipe

Shake and serve over ice cubes in a champagne saucer.

ETA(2) - Suzi - great minds think alike!

Frozen blueberries in my Limoncello Sangria?

    YES!

  • The mom to be is my SIL and she rarely drinks anyways...I've seen her drunk once in the time I've known her (16+ years).  She is totally cool with whatever we want to do. The more attention paid to food/drinks and the less the focus is on her then she's happy.
  • I co-hosted a baby shower last month and we served sangria.

I think if it's a light cocktail, it should be fine.

I'm co-hosting another one next Sunday and it is co-ed, the mom-to-be wants there to be beer for the guys and we are doing sangria or mimosas for the girls.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

    Then go for it!

I am definitely not judgy on that but am sensitive to the feelings of others (my MIL doesn't drink and it'd make her uncomfortable which would make me uncomfortable).

I couldn't be judgy on it because my BFF's first baby shower was thrown at a bar - because that is where she met most of her friends, my apt wasn't big enough to host, and the bar owners donated most of the food because she is a regular there.  It's not a fancy bar either... but you can do a lot with a backyard deck. • If I have to sit through baby shower games, there better be booze available.

    Amen, sistah.

I would go with champagne punch or sangria in this situation.

Even if there aren't games, I still need a cocktail!

  • I get irritated when cocktails aren't available at baby showers or any party for that matter.  I've purchased a gift and dedicated 2 or 3 hours of my precious weekend time.  Give me a mimosa at least!  (If there is more than one game there needs to be more!)

  • It was a must have for my shower. Actually one of the few things I had an opinion about. Just because I couldn't drink didn't mean my friends/family couldn't. We served a white sangria.

    Yes

All of my showers had wine.

  • I would serve alcohol at an intervention...lol.
  • thanks gals!  I'm doing the Limoncello Sangria! :)

  • What about something like champagne?  I think a spiked fruit punch would be good, too.
