Advice needed please

I need advice on how to handle a potentially tricky situation. We'll break this down as Job A and Job B.

Job A: Seems like a great company, interesting industry, really nice people. Job title would be a lateral move, pay is a slight increase from current job.

Job B: This is the job I'm really excited about. The position would be a step up professionally, it would be a move in a slightly different direction within Marketing that I think I would be really good at. The pay is a substantial increase...like 75% more than what I'm making now.

I had a phone interview w/ Job A on Wednesday and an in person this morning. It all seemed to go really well. I talked to several people within the company, we discussed salary etc. She said she'd give me time to think about it, but that if I wanted the job I needed to write a mock press release and if that went well we'd move forward...most likely with a job offer.

I have a phone interview w/Job B on Monday. If that goes well, there's 2-3 more steps. How do I approach it if Job A makes an offer before I know where I stand with Job B? If Job B wasn't an option I'd be happy w/Job A, but I'd rather have Job B and I'd like to see the interview process through. Do you tell Job A that you are in the middle of another interview process and you need some time to think? Is that ok?  Surely there are plenty of job seekers who have been in this position. What do you do?

Re: Advice needed please

  • This question is asked all the time.

Don't tell Job A that you have something going on with Job B. BUT do tell Job B that you're intervewing with Job A, but you really want to work for Job B. Ask what kind of timeline they're looking at and see if they're going to move quickly. If they're interested in you after Monday, they may be able to move things along.

In the meantime, I'm assuming you have a few days to write a mock press release, then a few days to think over the offer from Job A, assuming they make one (you just never know). I'd stretch that out as long as you can while getting through the process with Job B as quickly as you can.

Of course, there may be glitches in this scenario, but that's how I'd approach it initially.

  • That makes sense. I have some time before I need to provide the press release, so I figured I could reassess after my phone interview on Monday. This is all hypotheticals obviously and based on best case scenarios. I just want to be prepared if and when it comes up. Thanks!
