RIP computer....big sigh
so our old desktop finally bit the dust this week. thankfully i had a lot of photos and "important" stuff on an external drive so i don't think we lost anything critical. but now this means we are in the market for a new computer.
i type to you now via couch from a 2005 laptop i "borrowed" from work two jobs ago after they laid me off (still working on sending this one back). so we are a bit behind the times.
i thankfully have off today so i can cruise online guides for computers.....any nestie advice? what type of computer do you have? i think we are going to go laptop instead of a desktop (which we bought in 2006 when we got married) b/c face it, most home computing is done in front of the TV after work so the idea it can be portable is great.

We are seriously considering making the switch to a mac.
We're looking into the imac, which isn't portable, but my BFF has the macbook air and is obsessed with it.

i know they are a bigger investment but i highly recommend going to a mac. my 3.5 macbook is still going strong while josh had to buy a new PC laptop last december (2 laptops in the span of 18 months!). so ultimately, he spent more than i did. assuming you won't be doing any heavy duty video editing or graphic design, you'd be fine with a 13' or 15" powerbook. maybe even a macbook air?
we have our own laptops so the mac/PC thing is not an issue chez cheeky. thank christ as i really am a mac gal through and through.

I don't have any recs but there should be some really good sales coming up w/ the holidays. I think if you have to replace your PC, now is a good time. I know Walmart already came out w/ their Black Friday deals, and more BF as well as Cyber Monday deals should be revealed soon. Keep your eyes peeled

Not sure what he uses, but there is a lot of compatible software. I've got the whole Microsoft suite plus the Adobe Creative suite on my Mac.

Look into Parallels - it's a virtual desktop software that allows you to run a Windows operating system on your Mac. We're a Mac household but we both need to use programs that are Windows only from time to time and that has worked for us.
Edited to add: we love our macbook pro and our much older imac that is still kicking.
I know you can run windows programs on a mac with parallels (like the other person mentioned), but it's annoying, and as much as I love my Macbook, just get the PC, it will do everything you want
However, make sure you don't get the $500 PC, because I still believe you get what you pay for. Get a good deal, but don't just buy the low end version of ANY brand. We've had good luck with Dell, too, as well as Lenovo. I steer clear of HP laptops after the last few ones I've had crapped out after two years.
