What kind of money management/budget program do you use?

H handles all the finances right now. He has spreadsheets galore and has every last penny accounted for. Obviously a separation or divorce changes financial situations. I've heard mention of some programs that can be used and am wondering what are some of the programs you all use. I am thinking it was on this board as I don't go over to the MM board often.

I am a spender so I wanted to look into this now to kind of get an idea of what kind of budget I'll be looking at when single.

Re: What kind of money management/budget program do you use?

  • I create my own Excel spreadsheet.  I also insert formulas so I don't have to add or subtract everytime and customize my own categories.  I track what is coming in and what is coming out and have a summary for each month so I can see if I am staying on track or not.

I play personal games too such as trying to make my monthly bank statement  end result to have a shorter list than the month before.

  • Mint.com is a good (free) way of budgeting your money.

I personally use a spreadsheet, but mine is simple. I have all of my bills organized by what day of the month they're due. Then, I put them under what payday they fall. This way, on payday (every other Friday), I sit down and pay all bills that are due in those two weeks and put money into savings. Whatever I have left over is what I have to live on for those 14 days. Simple as that.

Obviously this is for my day-to-day spending and nothing long-term that I'm budgeting for.

  • I signed up for mint.com but am slacking so far.  I don't like spreadsheets so a program like mint.com is good for me because it puts my spending into categories (gas, groceries, bills, professional expenses, etc) and lets me see where my money is going.

  • Yes, that is it! Mint.com. I will check it out and see what I come up with.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting about this.

I just updated my budgets and transactions in Mint.com and remembered to check my Verizon usage online.  I found out that I'm using 92 out of the 900 minutes I'm paying for on Verizon because all of my friends and family are Verizon.  I just dropped down to a cheaper plan and saved myself $20/month.  Without mentioning Mint.com I would have totally forgotten to do this--thanks!

  • I have an excel spreadsheet. I have tabs for checkbook, each savings account, loans, etc. I'm an accountant so this is the kind of stuff I do for a living lol. I may check out Mint.com though....
