XP: Methodist West vs Memorial Hermann-Katy

Any opinions? I had DS at MH-Katy and really liked the staff. Dh would prefer I use Methodist this time because it's closer to where we are now and will be moving when the baby is born. I would still have my same doctor.

Re: XP: Methodist West vs Memorial Hermann-Katy

  • have you asked your doctor if she or he has offices at either hospital? If they see patients in an office that is adjacent to the hospital, your odds of having your own doc deliver your baby are higher.

Does your insurance charge a different deductible based on either location (and do both locations accept your insurance, because with healthcare reform there has been some movement in insurance companies and reimbursement rates at hospitals so some contracts have not been extended?) have you toured both locations?  I have only been in the Methodist location but both are newer hospitals so they should both be nice. I am pretty sure Methodist uses the same all-in-one room (labor and recovery) model and infant rooming-in model at that location as they do in their other hospitals. What is MH's like? Which do you prefer? Do they have comparable NICUs if God forbid you need one?

These are all things that would sway my decision if I were choosing a hospital. Good luck!

My doctor is at both, but her main OB/GYN practice is the building that's connected to MH so she can just take the walk way.

With Dh job ( now that he's direct)...again thank you and your DH...He has fabulous insurance that we pay one small copay for 1 doctors visit and the rest of my pregnancy and the birth is free!!!!!! I also assume it covers either hospital or Dh wouldn't have even brought it up.

I had DS at MH and loved the staff. My main nurse went way above and beyond when I was having issues after my c/s. Her shift was actually over and she refused to leave until she knew I was ok.

I have not toured Methodist yet. I figured I'd get some feed back and wait a little closer to the time. Last time, I got some really strange looks since I didn't look pregnant on the tour and the others looked like they were ready to pop.

The rooms sound pretty much the same.

I already know I will be having a scheduled C/S based on the issues from DS birth. My doctor said they know what the problem was/is so there is no point in putting me through trying to birth vaginally first, again.

These are all things that would sway my decision if I were choosing a hospital. Good luck!

  • I'm so glad everything worked out!

I'd talk to your doc at your next visit about where s/he prefers to deliver.  If s/he is connected to MH and you had a good experience there, you should still consider it.  But I have heard from a nurse in Methodist's maternity dept in West Houston that volumes have exploded - it might just be convenience, or perhaps it is something about it that appeals to them.  I haven't been on the unit and only know the one nurse so I cannot really say one way or the other.

How much closer to your home is it?  If it is a big difference maybe it's a convenience factor for DH going back and forth?  Or just getting you there in time if you go into labor so you are safely prepped for a C?

Since you will likely be scheduling a C it really sounds like a 50/50 decision for you.  I'd still call Methodist and confirm they accept your insurance though.  He might assume they do - that is what my DH would do.  I wouldn't know about the changing contracts if I didn't work in healthcare...

  • I had an emergency c/s at Memorial Hermann just 2 months ago and the staff was fantastic. The staff was outstanding. I toured all 3 hospitals in Katy before choosing where to deliver and I preferred Hermann hands down. I felt the nurses, support staff, and accommodations were much nicer. I also liked that they have a very low CSection rate (which I know isn't an issue for you now though).  My choice was confirmed when I had to make 2 trips to L&D for monitoring - the nurses treated me wonderfully.

  • I had an emergency C-Section at MH Katy last year.  And like the PP said, all the nurses were absolutely wonderful during my entire stay.

If you already know your doctor can be at either hospital, is there any way to ask about the nurses?  I saw all the nurses a whole lot more than I saw any of the doctors.  I think they could make or break your experience.
