Elf on the Shelf

How old were your kids when you started this tradition? I so want to do it with Benjamin but don't really think he will "get" it.

Re: Elf on the Shelf

  • This is the first year we're doing it. Katen is going to be 4 and Ana is almost 2. They both understand what it's about. We don't do the actual elf on the shelf though because Ana was kind of scared of it. We do Christopher (Christina) Popinkins. In their story they're not making a nice or naughty list. It's more for fun than getting them to behave.  :)  Such a fun idea. I plan to take pics of all the places Christina is found in the morning. I've been making a list of things for her to get into, find, or places to put her.

  • I had never heard of this until this year, but I'm thinking I'm going to give it a try.  I think Sophia would love it!

  • This is the first year we are doing it - G is 3.5 and Ingrid is 18 months. I think Gretta would have got it last year for sure, not sure if Ingrid really will. Well, she'll love looking for him in the morning w/ her sister, but wont understand the naughty/nice thing.  I am definitely using the naughty/nice list b/c i think it may be effective for G. :)  I just worry that G won't play along b/c she'll know the elf isn't real.  she is exactly like me as a child (I knew that santa was fake at 3), so i don't have much hope for holding on to the magic for very long, she is extremely inquisitive and doesn't take any bs.  ha!

  • We are doing it this year. I don't think G will 'get it'. However, I'm really just doing it to make him do different things overnight that G (and the daycare kids) can find the next morning! (turning the milk green, etc).

My MIL got us the book, I haven't read it yet but I'm excited to!

  • What is this phenomenon that I keep hearing about?
  • I bought the book/elf the other day ... I'm honestly having a hard time with it now though (and I'm having a hard time with the whole 'santa' thing).

I LOVE Christmas and how fun the season can be (love decorating, shopping, baking, presents, etc) but as I try to explain all of this to DS I hate how manipulative it all sounds and the lying.

We have the elf sitting on a shelf but after I told him about it and read the story ... hearing the words come out of my mouth ... made me cringe.

I don't think this is a tradition we keep. I think I am okay with the whole 'magic' aka lying about Santa to him but I don't like the manipulation.
