Sewing machine voltage question....

Hi Ladies....

So I might be able to have a new sewing machine for my birthday :) Im quite excited!!

As we tend to move around (different countries!) with my DH's job (and mine if I go back to work) I would ideally like to get one that would work in North America and Europe... and elsewhere!! At the moment I am using a UK voltage brother sewing machine which is fairly basic. It works which is good but I would love something more fancy. And Im using a transformer .... which is ok, but I don't like to leave it plugged in for too long!

So do any other makes other than Bernina do dual voltage machines? I can't really see much on the websites about voltage....

And bonus if anyone can suggest machines to look at. I do quilting... and ideally id like something that would do embroidery too, but the good ones that do both might be out of my price range! I would love the Bernina 580 or even 830... but yeah that isn't going to happen!! I think DH would go up to maybe $3000..... if Im lucky :)

There are a few shops around here which sell Bernina, Janome, Brother, Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff, Elna.... but I don't have a huge amount of time to look at them as DS is young...... but I intend to use nap times as sewing times :)

Any advice appreciated.... :)

Re: Sewing machine voltage question....

  • The only thing I can say is that when we moved from Switzerland in the mid-80's my mother had a new motor put in her Bernina so she could use it here in the States. I bought my Bernina last year, but wasn't aware that it was dual voltage.   I have a 730 with the embroidery module and totally love it. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

    Not much help, sorry!

Thanks :) I would love a Bernina... but it is a little expensive for me!! Well at this point anyway I don't think I can justify that amount to DH! $3K is pushing it really. Im not sure I'll even get one for that amount!! I think the Bernina 730 is quite expensive isn't it? Why they can't put approx prices on their websites!!...would make my life much easier!! Then I can stop dreaming of machines which turn out to be way out of my price range!!

I know Bernina do have away of making it useable for both voltages, Im not sure if it is switch or an adapter... but my friend has one she brought over from the UK and can use it here no problem!! ...it was one of the things she checked on before agreeing to move over!!

  • Yes, they're really pricy. I got a good deal on it on a Black Friday deal at my local Bernina Shop. She does a Saturday sale and everything in the store is 30% off. I had looked at the 830 but read a lot of reviews that were bad and didn't think it was worth the investment.    I'm so, so happy with the 730...seriously, you can totally tell the difference between this one and my HuskyStar.

My Bernina Dealer has "pre-loved" Berninas for sale.  Customers come in and trade up their Berninas and she re-sells them.  Some of the more basic ones are really, really affordable. Can you check into that?

  • I was mentioned to me by a Pfaff dealer that they made a machine in the past that was dual voltage.  But she recommended buying a Pfaff that could have the motor replaced.  Good luck.
