Front load washer and dryer Questions

DH and I are looking at buying a new washer and dryer when we move.

If you have a front load washer and dryer what do you like about it and what don't you like?

Do you have it on pedestals or did you set it on the floor?

If you looked at front load washer and dryers but then decided against them- why?

TIA!

Re: Front load washer and dryer Questions

  • I would love front loaders, but I have heard not so good things about them. My mom's work has one, and they were told to leave the door open on the washer because it started getting mold inside. Our laundry is in the basement right next to the playroom, so I wouldn't be comfortable just leaving the wash hanging open all the time. I am sure nothing would happen but who knows.

I also cloth diaper and it seems like it "might" be easier to wash in a top loader.

We are looking into something like this:

Sorry, I am not much help. Hopefully, someone can either confirm or deny these. Though #2 probably doesn't matter much to you. Smile

  • I am kind of the same way.  I really really wanted them but now that I am talking to people and getting ready to purchase, I am hearing not so great things so I want to make sure we are making a smart decision.
  • We have them and I love them. H built a pedestal type thing as those bad boys were pricey and he's handy so it worked. I dont really have any specifics as to why I like one over the other.

You should leave the door cracked for a lil while after the wash is done in order for it to somewhat dry out. Other than that no probs and that is really not a prob!

  • Bought one.  Hate it.  I don't think it gets anything clean like a top loader does, especially cloth diapers.  I have to take the diapers to my mom's to wash once a month to use her washer.  I would get rid of it in a heartbeat if I could.
  • Like -  the look of them

Don't like -  my clothes don't get clean.  I have a Whirlpool duet

Another bad feature is that sometimes they can smell like mold

They are expensive but are supposed to save you money b/c they use less energy and water.

THANK YOU!   I thought I was the only one.   I had K when we had a top loader and we were starting solids and finger foods.   It had no problems getting foods out even tomato based stains.   I get so sad because the kids will come home from daycare and I think to myself, well that brand new shirt that I just took the tags off of this morning is shot.  :(

  • We looked at front loaders but ended up buying the whirlpool cabrios last weekend.  They are top loaders without the middle agitator.  They are high efficiency but i wanted to be able to stop a load mid-cycle.

    So far so good

  • I have the Electrolux ones they were the largest on the market when I bought them 1.5 years ago. LOVE Them. Wouldn't go back to a top loader. Yes, you leave the door open but that is not a big deal to me as you should leave the lid open to your top loader. I have the peds for them. Which I love because it raises them up so I don't have to kneel or bend down to switch laundry. This was nice when I was pg. And my mom doesn't have the peds and I find it annoying. She has Kenmore ones which have been great for them.

I also do way less laundry with these than my old ones and dry time has been cut down.

  • I have front loaders and love it.  They use a lot less detergent and I can fit more in per load than I could with a top loader.  I haven't had a problem with it not cleaning as well.  I feel it's about equal to a top loader in that aspect.  Also I bought mine at best buy when they had a cray good deal, so it was under $900 total for my washer and dryer. I do not have the pedestals because they are pretty pricey, but I like to use the top of the units to put folded clothes as i'm doing laundry.  I would just check out reviews on whichever ones you look at and do your research ahead of time and you should be fine.
  • We have Samsungs. I do like them, I think they are gentler on clothes than my old top loader (with a central agitator) was. Definitely harder to wash CD in b/c I have to add water, otherwise they don't get clean.

We had a contractor build us a custom pedestal; it is tall enough to slide the laundry basket into so it is tucked right under the washer/dryer. There are 2 slots, one under each machine. Then he covered it in the same frieze carpet as the laundry room floor so they just blend right in. I am in love with these pedestals, it sounds so small/simple but I love them, it's nice to have somewhere that the laundry basket can be out of sight.

I do really like how much more energy efficient the washers are in terms of electricity/water usage. Unfortunately the wash cycles do take a lot longer (my "normal" wash is 59 minutes). There is a "quick wash" for 29 minutes. Some of the fancy cycles (bedding, whites, heavy duty, etc) are closer to 2 hours, or over if you add an extra rinse/fast spin/heavy soil etc.

  • The only thing I don't love about ours is that the washer has developed a funky smell, and I have no idea why cause we leave the door open to let it dry out after every wash like they say to do. My husband thinks its the rubber seal and the area of it where water seems to collect.. We bought some cleaner for this purpose, and it seems to help a little. It doesn't cause our clothes to smell or anything, it just smells afterward and it annoys me.

My DH built us our own bench type thing that we have them sitting on, out of 2x4s and plywood. Pennies compared to how much they rape you with the cost of the pedestals. I think you need to put them up on something though. I think it would be really hard to have to bend over to get the clothes out, IMO.

  • I love ours, we have Maytags and I have never noticed a smell in the 3 years we've had them.  I also think they clean great, ours has a button to push to do an oxi pre wash.  they did not, however, work well for cloth diapers.  But we're done with that, so not a concern any longer.  We bought the pedestal drawers.
  • we have a very plain top load washer, nothing pretty, no fancy colors, no digital numbers, and it was cheap. It is an ugly, GE workhorse. Runs like a champ. i've thrown tennis shoes, hats, (thin) floor rugs and everything into it. We've had it about 5 years and when it dies i will feel like we got our money out of it. It has never had an odor. Our old one, did though- May i sugest that for those who have had an odor issue that you try running a couple loads with vinegar, or maybe a load with just hot water and bleach? then wipe it down with vinegar or bleach? Check your user manual for cautions on this though.

I do love my front load dryer. It's gorgeous--pretty, fast and efficient. So, now you also know i don't have a matching set.  Embarrassed

No shame in that!  I didn't have a matching set for years.   Why waste money buying something just so it can match?  It does the job, right?   :)

  • Love ours as well. I haven't had an issue with getting anything clean. All of DH's clothes are nasty and stained red from the warning track, and they always come out clean. When we were looking I knew that I wanted a set that would be friendly to the cloth diaper washing regimen, so I made sure that I could add extra water and that there was a sanitize option (I obviously plan to CD if/when we have kids).

Our set was an open item pair from Best Buy (LG). I highly recommend looking at the open items there, HD, Lowes and the scratch and dent at NFM. We got our set for $800, with a bunch of accessories, when they retailed for $800 each.

My only gripe on them is that the washing portion takes longer and in some cases a lot longer than the top loader.
