Germany Ladies!

Hi there!  I'm in Germany with my DH for 3 months (through December), and just found out today that I'm pregnant with my first.  We're over the moon, as we've been trying for 12 months!  I'm only about 4 weeks along but, obviously, we will have our first appointment(s) while here in Germany.  I'm wondering what the timing of appointments here is; do they usually want to see you around 8 weeks, or earlier/later?  And which type of practitioner do we make an appointment with?  Our US insurance will cover us (though I have to go to an international "in network" practitioner), but just wanted to check whether it was a Frauenarzt(in) that we should be scheduling with or someone slightly different.  Also, we're about an hour from Frankfurt (to the East), so if anyone can recommend their doctor, let me know!

TIA!  Looking forward to getting my Mutterpass!

Re: Germany Ladies!

  • Congratulations to you!  Obviously, you're having a wonderful time, and hope that you continue to have such a nice time here :)

You will go to a Frauenarzt for your checkups, but I?'m not sure if your insurance will cover it without a referral from a GP.  They usually like to see you for your first appt. at around 8 weeks, some a little later, some a little earlier.  Sorry I don't have any advice as to doctors, I'm too far away.

  • Congratulations! My experience has been that you should call asap, and ask for an appt. and then they will tell you when they want to see you. My doctor liked to see people around six weeks when she could see a heartbeat. HTH!

  • There is an American Ob/Gyn in Weisbaden, her name is Dr. Sheila de Liz if you are concerned about the language barrier.
  • Congrats! My first appt was at 8 weeks, but again, that can depend on your practitioner. I don't have any advice on doctors since I'm pretty far from Frankfurt.
