when to start taking kiddos to...
Please help me end a debate! At what age would you start taking kiddos the events below or something like it...
Polar Express
Sesame street live
Movies
Circus
Re: when to start taking kiddos to...
We're waiting till at least 3, probably even longer than that. I've seen or heard of too many unhappy kids at shows and the circus. They love characters on tv shows etc., then you get their and they lose it because they are scared. Will be interesting to see what the other mom's say, but think I'll still avoid it until she can watch the TV, see the advertisement and beg and plead to go :P
BTW Abby turning 2, that went by fast!!!
I think most kids' activities (Polar Express, Sesame Street Live, circus) are good for three year olds. We took DD to see Yo Gabba Gabba this fall and she enjoyed the show. A two year old might do ok if the event doesn't fall during the middle of nap time.
I still haven't taken DD to a movie. I think she'll need to be at least 4 and maybe 5 before I try that. She can't manage to sit still through a 30 minute tv show, there's no way she'd be still and quiet during a movie at this age.
I would do Polar Express with James this year at 2.5. It's pretty short and he's into trains, so those are both in our favor.
I would wait until 4+ for Sesame Street or the circus as those both are bigger deals (could be overwhelming) and pricier (I want at least a small chance of them remembering or at least not freaking halfway through and wasting money.)
Movies is tough. I REALLY want to take James to see the Muppet movie this winter. I don't really know if he can handle it though. He'll gladly space out for 90 minutes watching Sesame St once a week, and hardly moves from him special couch. If the movie is really entertaining to him, we might be able to do it. But if I decide to take the plunge, we'll def do a matinee so we won't be out as much if he doesn't keep through the whole thing. 3-4+ is probably a better bet, but we might be dumb and try earlier.
We are (hopefully if it works out) taking the boys to Polar Express this year. I think they will enjoy it!
We took them to the circus last spring, but it was the Big Apple Circus, which is a one ring smaller circus and we sat fairly close. They had a good time except that it was nap time so Keaghan actually slept through part of it (not sure how he managed it but he did!)
We would do Sesame Street live at this point but it would have to be something they really enjoyed like Wiggles or Yo Gabba Gabba or Blues Clues in order for them to enjoy it.
Movies its going to be a while... I think the movie theater is too loud for me... I definitely think its too loud for them... plus I don't think they have the attention span to sit that long through a whole movie, or follow a plot...
It will. :-)
E has been to the circus, at age 2, and I think they went to a Santa's Village type thing when he was really little, before his parents were divorced. As far as I know, he did well at both.
This year he did well for a couple hours at the Fryeburg fair before crashing. We skipped Storyland this year though because we figured he'd enjoy it more at 3 and a half than 2 and a half.
I think it depends on the kid and the situation too. We did the Polar Express in Portland last year with Eli at 1.5 and he loved it. He loves trains and we had been on the ride at the Trolley Museum twice so we were pretty sure he'd love it. We're doing the North Conway Polar Express this year, which I know is longer, but I think he'll do well.
We did the movies a few times this summer, when he was a little over 2. Twice were the free Mommy and Me movies at Smitty's, where they keep the lights brighter and it's not a big deal for kids to talk etc. Since they serve food we got lunch and that made it pretty easy. Eli was able to sit through an hour or so of the movie and neither were characters he was particularly interested in. It was a good low stress/investment test to see how he would do. The only "regular" movie we have taken him to was Winnie the Pooh and it was a huge success. Again, we went to Smitty's so he had food to eat, the movie was only an hour long and we had just returned from Disney so he was fully in love with Pooh and pals.
We're trying Sesame Street Live this year and maybe Disney on Ice. It is pricier, so it makes me more nervous, but the timing works well with nap and he loves anything with music and those characters, so we will see.
Haven't done the circus, but did York Wild Kingdom, Storyland, Funtown and Disney World last summer at just over 2 years old and all went really well.
