Leep Procedure & 1 other Question

I had results of CIN II come back from my colposcopy so I have a leep procedure coming up november 1st. We opted for the leep instead of trying anything else first because at the beginning of the year I had a normal pap at meps. I was trying to join the military.. that didn't work out, anyway.. in July I had another pap and it was classified as lsil. low grade and then in august when I had another done for second opinion on getting a colposcopy it was classified as hsil.. high grade. so as you can see it's changing relatively fast. How was your leep procedure? I'm really worked up about it and my dr didn't mention putting me to sleep for the procedure, is that something i could ask her to do? I found the colposcopy to be extremely uncomfortable. Plus.. I've been having severe cramps all month long since about july.. its worse if im standing for long periods of time which i've noticed with my new hostessing job. any idea on what that could possibly be from?

Thanks everyone!

Re: Leep Procedure & 1 other Question

  • Severe cramps all m onth long?

hasn't anybody requested a hysteroscopy and transvaginal ultrasound?

Not normal to have cramps all month long. See another doc and get another opinion -- and suggest the hysteroscopy and transvag ultrasound to them.

I don't think general anesthesia is usual for a LEEP.
  • I haven't had leep but did do cryotherapy.  I know what you mean about the colposcopy.  I feel as if I should have been sedated.  You can always request something.  I would call before the procedure and ask about it.  Good luck!  I know it is a very hard time.
  • Yes, I've had a LEEP. It is seriously no big deal. It really wasn't much worse than the colposcopy (I've had two) and biopsy - you will receive injections in your cervix (this freaked me out, but it honestly didn't hurt much worse than a pap.....just a few pinches followed by some cramping. And the rest is just awkward, because you don't feel anything and just hear the equipment, like getting a cavity filled after novocaine.

You really don't need to be sedated or under anesthesia for this, that's honestly a bit laughable to even consider. Take some Motrin (my OB advised 800 mg) before your appointment, try to relax, and realize that it will be over in 15 minutes. And on your way home, stop and pick up something from Cold Stone Creamery.

  • I ditto the ice cream!
  • I had a LEEP done, and they did put me under.  It was much less painful than the colposcopy (which I had done first).  It only took about 15 min for the actual proceedure, and I felt fine the next day.  Good Luck!
  • I have had both. My doctor recommended that he put me under for the leep procedure too. I found out that i was high level and the next step would be cancer. Putting me under was great! definitely ask for it - it'll ease your stress.
  • I'm honestly shocked that there are docs who will put patients under general anesthesia (something not to be taken lightly) for such a simple, painless procedure. LIke I said, it just seems so laughable to me. It seriously doesn't hurt that bad, certainly not bad enough to justify being put under.

  • I had a LEEP done about a year and half ago. It was uncomfortable, but not terrible. They put a pad on your leg to "ground" you. They inject something to numb you, and that shot hurt a bit. Then I don't recall feeling much else. I did start to cramp soon after, and the cramps continued for a while.

Be sure to ask your doctor about side effects. Maybe even ask him/her to write them down? I was pretty worked up and couldn't remember everything. There can be discharge, some of which is normal. I was told to refrain from sex for a set time (I apologize for not remembering the instructions at this point). It was uncomfortable when we began to have sex again; but that eventually went away. It's important to realize that you're scabbing -- so you must be gentle with your body for a little while.

  • Thanks ladies. It went well!

  • I had a LEEP a few years ago.  It was super easy.  I went to the hospial, and they knocked me out.  I woke up, and and felt fine.  No pain, no soreness, nothing.  I wanted to go shopping that afternoon, but my mother (who had come to stay with me, in case I needed help) wouldnt let me lol.  In fact, we stopped for lunch at a restaurant on our way home.  They gave me the option of a local, or going under.  I went under for it.
