I'll (likely) be moving to Anne Arundel Co. area Feb/March timeframe.
I'd like to get an idea of what commuting times would be like for AACO to Silver Spring? AACO to Rockville? What areas of AACO would you recommend to minimize the traffic, or am I screwed?
Also, if I had to get into D.C. - where would you rec I live for easier access to the metro. I'm not sold on MTA to Metro, but I'm willing to hear some experiences from those who do it daily.
Living in Silver Spring is not off the list yet, but after going through there over the weekend, I think it's too urban for my liking. I was more comfortable in Colesville area and headed towards HO CO.
TIA!
Re: Help me project commuting times
I think it REALLY depends where in AA County. I would think that Colesville and Hoco would be MUCH closer to a commute into Rockville/SS. Of course, they are supposed to open the ICC on the 22/23rd of this month, so that could be a game changer. It costs $4 each way, but is supposed to cut commute time in half. The people I know that work in DC have done one of three things 1) take the MARC train into Union station and get a bus/metro/walk from there, 2) drive in 3) drive to a metro stop and take the metro in. I can't imagine that driving to the metro and then taking it in would really save that much time or $ in the long run...I don't know anyone who has taken the bus into DC/
Hopefully someone else will be of more help.
ETA: My cousin lives in Odenton and takes the MARC train from New Carrollton to DC everyday. He works at the US Treasury and it takes him 1.5 hours, roughly.
Hi! - I live in Annapolis and I know people who commute from here to Bethesda and it ain't pretty, but they do it because they love Annapolis. I know there are some nesties who live in Crofton/Gambrills/Odenton and commute into the DC/495 area- hopefully some of them will contribute.
Also I just wanted to say welcome- I know I have seen you on some of the national boards.
My husband and I commuted for 3 years from Odenton to Bethesda. That was about as long as either of us could take it. If we left before 6:00 a.m., we could get there in about 45 min. Any time after 6 a.m. and it would take at least an hour. Going home could be even worse, especially on Fridays.
I can't even fathom going further on 495 past the Connecticut Ave exit (which is where we got off). Perhaps the ICC will help if you're able to use that for your commute.

I live over the bay bridge and commute to College Park every day. I know there is a commuter bus that picks people up in Davidsonville and takes them to the New Carrollton Metro and there is also one that goes into DC. The beltway gets backed up right after I exit most days and I'm not sure how far that back up goes (as to Conn ave, 270, etc.) Rt 50 is my biggest nemesis as you never know if its going to be wide open or jammed pack due to an accident. Since I've been back to work after maternity leave (sept) there has been at least one major accident a week on RT 50. It can take me 45 minutes to 90 minutes in the morning, but thats also with Bay Bridge traffic.
I know Lsgarver is someone who lives in AA co and commutes to the Bethesda area, hopefully she'll chime in.
I think you need to budget a minimum of 90 minutes each way on a daily basis, and probably closer 2 hours.
Silver Spring is a huge area and can be 20 miles apart. Where did you look and waht didn't you like? What was wrong w/ Colesville?
I live in Crofton and commute to Rockville/North Bethesda everyday. My thoughts:
-First and foremost, it sucks. No matter how how you slice it. I work a shifted schedule to miss the worst of it and it takes 50 minutes to an hour. If I have to drive during rush hour it routinely takes an hour and a half.
-It can be unpredictable. Construction, accidents, a random roll of carpet on the side of the road--all can throw you off by a half hour or more.
-Add 30 minutes to your commute in the rain. People are idiots.
-It's traffic, plain and simple. On late nights or early mornings, I've done the drive in 40 minutes or less. All the extra time comes from volume and those unpredictable things. The stop-and-go and dealing with other drivers wears on you much more than driving on the open road for the same amount of time.
-The New Carrollton Metro station and the MARC station in Odenton are good alternatives if your car is in the shop or you need to go into the city but they take way too long and are way too expensive to use on a daily basis.
-There's a good "back way" that takes about an hour: 32-198-28 into Rockville. I use this when I think 495 is backed up. Google Maps with traffic and WTOP are your best friends for seeing what's ahead of you. The back way has a ton of lights and is less predictable lately because it goes through ICC construction.
I've gotten used to it now and the commute is the lesser evil compared to moving right now (this is also a temporary job/training position so I wasn't willing to move to accommodate it). But, there was one night about a month into my job where I came home and just cried because it took me over 2 hours of inching forward to get home. And I deal with stress well. It becomes part of your life and you get "good" at it but it's a shock at first.

I live in Columbia and commute to Rockville. We are thinking about moving, but I don't like areas as far south as Silver Spring personally. The new ICC portion to 29 and 95 is supposed to open on November 22nd. This will cut down on travel time to Rockville from areas in AA county and HoCo, but it will cost you. The current rate is 25 cents per mile.
Currently, I take a lot of back roads because I took 495 to Bethesda a few years ago and it was just miserable. I can't work a shifted schedule so I'm stuck with the traffic and don't want to put up with the issues on 495 so I take either 198/28 and back roads or 108, either to the ICC.
Hi there! Did you ever get a DEVA cut?
Thanks all for the comments. I currently commute over an hour each way, so the idea is to minimize it. I hope to post more as I get more details down the road.
To the poster who asked about Colesville - I liked the area, and I would consider it. But we'll be renting, so it's all up in the air. If HO CO will be easier of a commute, I'd consider that for sure. I like both areas equally.
And when I say MO CO, headed more towards HO CO, I am talking about closer to Rt 29 area. How would a commute from there be?
FWIW, I commute from Pasadena/Glen Burnie to Bethesda. Sometime in the spring, that will change to Rockville.
Its not pleasant, but we like Baltimore much better than DC. It takes me about 40-50 minutes to get from my house to the 95/495 junction in College Park. After that, it varies so much around the topside of the beltway. Taking 29 doesn't really help much either.
The good thing is I work until 6pm, and when I leave after 6pm, I can be home in under an hour (50-55 minutes).
But we are really so much happier here than we were in NoVA or Harford County (when I was working at APG).
YGPM!
