Anyone in the legal field..

I have an interview on Tuesday for a legal assistant position. I have done research on the firm and just bought a really nice new suit for the interview. I also Googled typical interview questions so I don't feel blindsided by anything. I'm excited but really nervous. Does anyone have any other recs to prepare myself? Is there anything specific you would look for in an assistant?

Re: Anyone in the legal field..

  • Sounds like you are really prepared.  I would review your resume a couple of times and pay attention to any gaps you have.  Some employers look at that and will ask questions.  I always find it helpful to answer the sample questions out loud to practice my responses.

     Organization and multi-tasking abilities are a must usually in assisting positions.

     Good luck and remember to be yourself!

  • Things I would look for in a legal assistant (I'm an attorney)

    -Attention to detail for proofing/deadlines, ability to multi-task, helping me stay organized, whether it is knowing where my files are or asking what I need prepped for a meeting/court, a good sense of humor, the ability to work under stressful conditions sometimes, a quick learner.  I also want my asst to take an interest in who our clients are and what they do.   Good luck!

  • Do you know what kind of lawyers you would be helping? Do you have prior law firm experience?

    If you'd be working in litigation, for example, it would be good to talk about any experience you have with electronic filing (federal court, and if your state court has it), preparing/formatting pleadings, etc.

    My ideal legal assistant would have the following characteristics:

    * Resourceful - find a solution to a problem by calling someone or working with your peers instead of coming to me with a silly excuse about why you can't get something done;

    * Meticulous (I hate having to correct subject lines of letters or changing pronouns because my secretary didn't bother proofreading whatever letter she cut and pasted)

    * Organized. I think one of the most important characteristics of a legal assistant is the ability to keep the lawyer and his or her files organized.

    Will you be interviewing with HR or with the actual attorneys you'll be working for?  As with most interviews, personality is also key.  It's important to fit in with the environment and get along well with the people you work with.

     Good luck!
