Are you hosting Thanksgiving this year?

For the Americans on this board: Are you going to host Thanksgiving this year? If you are going to host, what is on the menu?

I think I am going over my MIL's house. She is going to make a roasted chicken (It is PITA to buy a turkey here) and I will bring the traditional side dishes and dessert.

Re: Are you hosting Thanksgiving this year?

  • I'm not sure yet.  I feel like I should, since I'm trying to celebrate American holidays with our son, but it's just so much work and money for one meal.

  • I don't even get the day off from work...

I think we're just going to skip Thanksgiving this year.   It's just my fiance and me...I'll be in Scotland and he'll be in Norfolk.   It doesn't fit into our schedules (or budget) to travel that weekend.  Meh.

  • I have for the past 4 years - inviting progressively more people. The first year it was another couple, so 2 guests. The year after that 4 guests, then 6 guests, and last year we had 8 guests. Even though each couple brought something, it was so much work. I decided this year I'm just going to do a little Thanksgiving with DH, DD, and me.

  • I wasn't going to do anything since I'm stressed out of my mind this year, but MIL bought me a turkey and then asked me "So when are we coming over for the family dinner?"

Erm. Very nice she bought the turkey but WTF, I would've loved it if someone said something to me before surprising me with an "OH! You have to cook for 8 people next Saturday!"

    *twitch*
    Think I'll do:

    1. Turkey

    2. Mashed potatoes

    3. Peas - but Spanish style with tacos de jamon, olive oil, and lots of garlic

    4. various desserts

What else should I do? I need something easy. I simply don't have time - at all.

  • I guess you dont have an American store where you live because I would suggest buying a can of cranberry sauce.

Are you going to make apple or pumpkin pie? Stuffing? Sweet potatoes? Corn bread?

  • We're not hosting this year (not that I have ever :-), our friend has asked us to come over to his parents' house and I'll be bringing broccoli rice casserole - it's that one dish that makes DH feel like it's "Thanksgiving". If that wasn't the case, we'd probably have a small thanksgiving, just us. I've been seeing little turkeys around which are super cute :) And would be perfect for just a few people.

  • Nope. We will go to my parents' place about 45 min away.
  • Yes, we are hosting. I'm going to make 1-2 turkeys and homemade stuffing. This year I'm really going to have to farm out the side dishes to the guests (although I'm hoping someone else wants to make one of the turkeys). We're hosting what we term "the orphans". Most are servicemembers, some are contractors, but almost everyone is either single or a geo-bachelor. We open up our home to provide a place to be comfortable for the holiday, serve some traditional holiday food, and have some sense of family while away from family.

We usually host for Christmas as well, but considering the timing of this little girl it's a bit fat "we'll see". If she shows up a bit early then I probably wouldn't mind hosting if someone else will cook the main turkey/ham and leave me with just a side dish.

  • No.  Not that I ever have though.  This will be the 2nd Thanksgiving that we've missed.  Sad.  We're going to Germany that weekend so I won't be too sad.

Maybe you can do less food but still make it Thanksgiving? Do a chicken breast, and just make a few smaller sides, and then do some fun Thanksgiving crafts or something? I know you can come up with some good ones, you are good with stuff like that!

My parents are hosting, I did last year and this year we are going to theirs, but they only live 1.5 miles from us!

  • Yes, I am hosting this year. We've invited a British couple and their kid over for dinner, so it'll be four adults and two kids.

I'm making roast chicken, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, homemade dinner rolls, cranberry sauce, stuffing, apple pie, sweet potato pie and chocolate chip cookies.

  • Not hosting this year! Our friends who live in the neighboring ocmpound are having some people over. We went last year, and it was a blast. They have a projector and they show American football games while we're eating, so it feels like Thanksgiving at home :-)

I've been recruited to make the stuffing, and I'm pretty excited! I am going to make regular stuffing (my mom's recipe) and then I want to try a cornbread stuffing!

Also, I found pumpkin here so I'll definitely be making a pumpkin pie for myself at home :-) (And maybe to share with co-workers)! :-)

  • I've hosted dinner for the last seven years and I'm not doing it this year.  I am going to a dinner a week from today and bringing the turkey, but I don't have to clean or cook tons of other stuff.  Bliss.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.

Thank you!  We actually just did our first craft this afternoon!

And we have a Sunday roast each week, so I'll probably just move it to Thursday and add pumpkin pie. :)

    Any chance you're in Edinburgh??

We host every year as we're pretty much the only Americans here. We usually have it on Friday though, DH takes off work to cook all day. We have somewhere around 10-12 people crowded around our table and we usually stay up super late with lots of wine :-)

We make turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce (super easy to make from scratch, we have a great recipe), sweet potato casserole with marshmallows (my demand), mashed potatoes, some sort of veg, pumpkin pie, and a pumpkin cranberry bread that is more like a dessert. Our friends bring wine and starters usually although we haven't given people assignments yet :-)

Thanksgiving has always been a big deal for us as it's the only holiday we both grew up celebrating so we like to make a big deal about it. And the food is yummy :-) Our guests are always from all over the place so it's nice to introduce people to the yumminess of pumpkin everything!

  • Yes, we have the past 2 years so we're planning on hosting again this year. We live in a small apartment however and with 11 guests I'm worried about space. I'd like for all of us to sit down to eat together this time but FI isn't concerned about it all. So we'll see how we work out space issues. We'll be having

    Turkey
    Macaroni and cheese
    Potatoes Au Gratin
    Green bean casserole
    Apple bacon stuffing
    Canned cranberry sauce lol
Either carrots or salad (maybe both)
    Apple Crisp with ice cream

Basically the whole traditional deal. Except for yams and pumpkin.. can't get any of those. Surprisingly however my supermarket carries canned cranberry sauce for a reason that is still unknown to me haha. Everything will be homemade, as I've found an awesome recipe for homemade condensed soup... really a life saver for me. For a long time I didn't know what to do with recipes that called for Campbell's condensed soups!

  • I always hosted Thanksgiving when I was in London. I'd make the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, my American friends would make traditional sides like sweet potato casserole and green bean casserole while my British friends would bring lots of booze :)

I wish I could get it together to do the kinds of crafts you do. I just never feel like I have the time, or maybe the motivation :)

  • Nope, we're in the US for Thanksgiving this year and visiting my goddaughter and her family. I'll help my friend cook though, since we're staying at her house a couple of days.

  • DH and I have started a tradition of having a really nice meal in a restaurant on Thanksgiving proper, and then hosting or attending a Thanksgiving on Saturday. Last year, we hosted two of our closest friends (one English and one American) and that was lovely. This year, we've been invited elsewhere but are debating about whether we'd rather host.

The restaurant dinner is always so lovely--a set menu with a starter (last year I had scallops), a traditional main (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, veggies, etc), and a dessert (had apple pie in 2009, something different this year). It's amazing, and I look forward to it every year.

  • Yes.  I invited 3 other couples, got my last rsvp yesterday.  I'm planning a dinner party the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  On the menu are:  turkey roasts (dark & white meat), with cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, spinach casserole, and pumpkin pie.  I am considering doing some shortbread for those that don't like the pumpkin pie, but I am not sure about that.

I am pretty excited about it.

  • Nope. If DH were home I'd just do a roasted chicken dinner (turkey is ridiculously expensive here) with pumpkin pie for the two of us. Don't know any other Americans here. Since he's still in hospital and will be then, I won't even be acknowledging the day this year. He's on a special diet so I can't even make the food and take up to him.

  • Nope, and never have. This year we'll be with my family. My mom does a very big, traditional Thanksgiving meal every year. We (meaning my parents) used to host about 30 people every Thanksgiving, but now the logistics of that don't work anymore, and I think my mom is relieved :)

We've done Thanksgiving with the ILs for a few years in a row, so I'm excited to have my mom's gravy again!
