Recommend your basic sewing machine

So I'm going to start sewing again...I haven't since high school.   I had a sewing machine in my basement that my mom had gotten at a garage sale...well after years of collecting dust, I finally looked at it... and well it's a relic and I can't get it to catch the bobbin.

Anyway - I think I'm going to take the plunge and buy a fairly simple new machine...anyone have any recs?  I'll be sewing mostly light fabrics for pillowcases/curtains/aprons/ dresses for LO , etc.

 Thanks!

Re: Recommend your basic sewing machine

  • singer makes a basic one. I have always like their brand. I know Costco has one in their ads or online then of course check joann's they have coupons all the time and you may even try the sewing machine shop on 72nd st. Next to the battery place just south of NFM. You may be able to get a good deal on a used one to get you started again.

My MIL has a $$$$ berina that she doesn't know how to use. WinkI am not sure what they have for a basic one and it's costs. There is a berina store here in town I think up north off of 90th st. maybe???

  • I have a Brother and really like it.  Singer and Bernina are good brands too.  I'd definitely look for coupons for JoAnn or Hancock.  If you sign up for JoAnn's mailing list, you'll get them in the mail.
  • Highly reccomend this one:

I never sewed a stitch in my life before I bought it. And I was able to teach myself no problem. It's really easy to thread, and to thread the bobbin and get that set up.

  • I think there are a couple in some black friday ads (walmart for example) if you are willing to brave the crowds! P.S. I don't think anyone will fight you for a sewing machine Stick out tongue

I was just going to post this. :-)

  • Black friday specials available online usually too :)  There are some look on black friday sites for which ones.

  • If I was looking for one again, I would get one that has a removable cover over the arm that goes up and down.  The Brother that I have does not open up, so if the light bulb goes out, I have to take it in somewhere to get it replaced.  I'm not sure how many are like this, but I know on my mom's 30 year old machine, it opens up for cleaning and bulb replacement.  I haven't had any issues, but when the bulb goes out, I am going to be annoyed!
