Kindle Question

DH want a Kindle for Christmas, but I don't know which one to get him.  I know he wants one with the e-ink (so no Kindle FIre), but beyond that I'm not sure.  Is having 3G important, or is having wifi good enough?  Are there any advantages to touch screen over keyboard?  Also, did you get yours with our without "special offers"?  If you have them, are they a PIA?

 Thanks!!!

Re: Kindle Question

  • I can't be too much help since I have the first one that came out that came with free 3G. I enjoy having the 3G so I can download anywhere I want but I wouldn't have paid extra for it. You just have to be more mindful and download books before you go anywhere or find a place with free wifi. I don't use my kindle for anything other then reading so I wouldn't need 3G for any of the other features. Mine has a keyboard and I don't mind it at all. I can't help with special offers thought.

  • Not a Kindle person, but the questions are universal for all eReaders.  I was like your H and wanted the eInk (otherwise, I would have gotten an iPad!).  The Wi-Fi was more than enough for me.  Unless you're reading a new book every couple days and are on the go a lot, I don't think it's necessary to have the 3G connection.  And I also went with an all touch-screen Nook.  I like it because it's easier to trick my mind into thinking it's reading a real book because I don't have a bulky keyboard at the base of it.  I haven't had any issues with it at all.  I'm sure, though, it's all what you're used to using.

Is this going to be a surprise or can you take him to a store and have him play with one?

  • I have the one with the keyboard and no 3G. To me, the 3G wasn't worth the extra money. I strictly use it for reading only and we don't travel much. I just download a couple books before we leave on our trip and I'm set. I could see where the 3G would be nice if you traveled a lot but I didn't need it. Good luck!

  • Everyone else has stated it all pretty well, but I figured I'd add my agreement. I can't comment on the touch screen or special offers, as my Kindle has the keyboard, eInk (LOVE) screen, and no special offers. I really don't think the 3G is necessary. You just need the wifi connection when loading new books on the Kindle, so if you know you're not going to have wifi for a while, you can just load the books ahead of time.

  • I have a Kindle with keyboard and 3G. I really like having the 3G because I read pretty quickly so it's nice when we're on trips being able to download new books from anywhere (like on the beach this summer). I think it depends on when he'll be using it. If it will mostly be at home then wifi should be fine, but if he travels a lot I think the 3G is nice to have. I absolutely love my Kindle!
