Anyone have any advice on car shopping?

I last time I bought I car I knew the owners of the dealership so it was easy.  We think we have narrowed it down to a Mazda cx-9 and a Huyndai Veracruz.  I want to say I have heard that Hunydai doesn't haggle but I could be wrong.  At Mazda we already have the offer at 500 less than invoice but I wonder if that is really good or not.  I really hate this.

Re: Anyone have any advice on car shopping?

  • Are you buying new?  If so, I would look around online at different dealers and see what they are advertising the model you are looking at for.

I remember looking at a car one day and they told me XYZ was the bottom line, the next day in the paper the same dealer had the exact same model priced much lower than what they had told me was the "bottom line" the day before.

ETA:  I'm not familiar with those brands in particular so I can't comment whether $500 off is good or not.  I'm leaning towards not but that depends on if they haggle with price or not.   I know if I went to Dodge or Chevy, that would pretty much be a joke to get that little off.   However, Volkswagen, depending on the model, you wouldn't get much off the sticker price.

  • DH always has good luck with the online sales people.

  • I just remember spending hours and hours and hours on Edmunds.com, but I couldn't tell you the specifics as it was a long time ago that I bought.

  • we looked at those and ended up getting a subaru tribeca.  so my recommendation is... buy a subaru tribeca ; )
  • Our friends had a Veracruz and thought it was the best car in the world. Then about a year later, they were taking it into the dealership every other weekend for something or other. They traded it in for an F-150.

The CX-9 was rated the best SUV in Motor Trend or some car magazine. We looked at them in May/June and the big guy at the dealership was proud to show us that article.

We went hours on Edmunds too and just researched all over. We found a dealership that we really liked and thought we got a fair price. DH says he'll always pay a little more than the best deal if the process is easy and the dealership isn't filled with slimey sales people.

  • We've had a veracruz for over a year and still love it. The dealer gave us an awesome deal and about 2k over the amount offered by anyone else for our trade in.

But I think that dealership is giving on trade ins, they are also a nissan dealer and when BIL bought a car they didn't go out and look at the trade in because it was raining and offered a great price.

Also the warrenty covers everything bumper to bumper for 100,000 so we were comfortable with it. From what I researched they've revamped them over the past couple years and have had less problems.

  • Once you have figured out the car and options you want, you can do your shopping completely over the phone.  Work several dealers against each other.  A good person to start with is the internet manager.  See what Dealer A will offer, and then call Dealer B to see if they can beat it.  Keep working it until you get a price you like.  The more dealers you talk to, the greater your chances of getting price down.

To give you a good idea of purchase prices, try scouring message boards for the car you want.  There is usually a thread on there where people are sharing the purchase prices and regions they bought their cars.

    Good luck!

Ditto on edmonds.com. It will tell you invoice and what people are actually getting the cars for now.

  • If you are trading yours in, get a quote from CarMax and Texas Auto Direct and do your research on Edmunds and kbb.  All knowledge is good!

We had a specific car we wanted, so I looked at pretty much every Houston dealerships online selection to get a feel for the cost of it.  Then we looked at a few in person - found the one we wanted.  They don't like to budge on online prices, since everyone can see those - we walked away and they called us back the next day.  We only got an additional $500 off, but we felt the price was alright, anyway, so we were ok with that.  (ours was used - dont' know if that matters or not).

  • Also if you are a Costco member; their incentive and prices are great.  I know they work with Hyundai and I'm pretty sure they have Mazda deals too.
