Help, how to get rid of Fruit flies??

I left strawberries out on my counter a week or so ago and forgot about them. As one or two of them went bad I started seeing fruit flies. I threw the strawberries away immediately but the fruit flies wont go away. I don't see them until I take out some wine or juice, then they seem to be everywhere.

I already tried a trap (a cup with some wine, a plastic wrap on top with holes poked in). According to the internet they go in through the holes but cant get out.

Well apparently my fruit flies are extra smart because they went in and out as they wished.

I also put out a sticky tape with a few drops of wine on it but the two or so that actually went on the tape were able to get loose again.

What else can I do to get rid of them for good???

Re: Help, how to get rid of Fruit flies??

  • Just went through this.  I filled a wine glass halfway with apple cider vinegar and some dish soap.  I didn't cover it, just left it on the window sill by the sink.

I had to empty it that night (it had a lot of drowned fruit flies), then did it again and left it for a few days  They haven't been back

    Good luck!

    This!

  • I have this problem as well here and there. Did the same thing that you did and they were able to get out of the holes. I too a stick fly trap and hung it up but i put the apple cider vinegar on it. It attracted them like crazy and they weren't able to get off. I trap most of them that way.

I have also read though that they will take care of themselves and just kind of die off after a while once you get whatever is causing them out and taken care of.

Ugh.  We went through this and it was HELL!!  The apple cider and vinegar was our plan of attack too.  Such a pain....good luck!

  • Okay, I put out a container with red wine vinegar (didnt have apple cider vinegar) and dish soap and those little f**ers are just stitting on the rim, starring at it.

The apple cider vinegar is a key ingredient. You may want to consider running to the store. On the bright side, you don't need much and it's cheap.
