@ Where to buy a new mattress?

D's crib is from Ikea, and so is his mattress. He absolutely HATES his memory foam mattress, so much so that he refuses to even climb into his bed anymore (it's converted into a toddler bed). I'm looking for a new sprung mattress, since he adores our double bed.

The real question is : Can I use a non-Ikea mattress with an Ikea crib? If so, where would you suggest I look for a new mattress?

  • I'm not sure about the ikea vs non ikea part, but I ordered my cotbed mattress off amazon.

I would just measure the mattress he's using now and then google for a spring version.

  • Just wanted to say, as a non-parent, I am loving this whole @ thing. Even though I opened this thread, I didn't have to if I didn't want to ;-)

Can you get a sprung mattress from Ikea?

  • I could, but I just like to shop around for the best deals.

Thanks ladies, I'll check out Amazon after I measure the mattress.

  • You can use a non-ikea mattress as long as it fits. We have a crib from Babies R Us (I forget the brand) but it didn't come with a mattress. I ordered a Safety 1st mattress from Amazon because it was a better deal. Fits fine, crib mattresses are generally one standard size (at least in the US...)
  • Hi, I am not sure on sizing, but we got James' sprung mattress from John Lewis. It was something like ?70/?80 2 years ago, but definitely worth. Even though his bed is only a toddler bed itis the most comfortable in the house, I wish that I could change his mattress to fit our bed. When we upgrade him to a single bed, we will go back to John Lewis without a doubt. They are not much more expensive (if at all) and their quality is great - this is coming from a Mom with a boy that loves to jump and do handstands on his bed.

  • Thanks for the rec Blushing! This helps tremendously. I'll look on the John Lewis site and see if I can find anything in our price range (and the required measurements). If not, DH and I have decided to just go ahead and get a twin sized bed and retire the crib for now. We want something that's going to hold up through the wear and tear of a normal active kid who also likes to jump on the bed, which also takes a standard sized sheet. The sheets we bought from BRU are too large for the Ikea mattress, that's why I asked about sizing.

  • This is the mattress that he has - http://www.johnlewis.com/231348009/Product.aspx

And this is the bed - http://www.johnlewis.com/231331003/Product.aspx

(I know you are not looking for a bed rec, but I love his bed that is why I am showing you, lol - ignore me)

  • From having recently done cot and cotbed research, I know the 70x140cm size of Blushing's is the standard cotbed size so if that's what you have sheets shouldn't be an issue - mothercare do them in that size too (though I found their mattresses to be a bit pricey compared to the one I got, but I'm in Dublin so no good to you for suppliers!)

;) That bed does look plenty sturdy, Blushing. Originally we were going to just give D our bed, but I'm tired of having to share with him, being kicked in the face in the middle of the night, and the fact that we can't fit two double beds in our room.

  • This is the one we've got now, and the foam is very firm. Our sprung mattress is a bit older, so it's worn down to the point where it gives very little support.

Milo is in a single bed now, but he also has the nicest bed and mattress in the house.  What's that about!?

If that is the size you have (120x60) it is the standard cot size - should be able to get an alternative in many shops and bedding to fit it too.

Thank you Irish! I've been here three years and still have the American measurements in my head...

  • Check the size of the Ikea mattress and see whether it matches standard crib mattress size (2"L x 28"W x 6"H). If not, you could always order a custom crib mattress to match your crib size. I got one from aBaby.com ? you can get custom sizes for a regular or an organic mattress.
