Hello again!
I received helpful feedback on my trophies question so I thought I'd get your input on another de-cluttering situation:
What would you suggest I do with a cake cutting set (engraved with names & a date) and personalized matchbooks (~400) for a wedding that didn't happen? I have no desire to hang onto these items but I would feel so wasteful just tossing them in the trash. I thought about finding some way to donate them but don't know that anyone would want this stuff with other people's names on them.
This may sound dumb but would it be dangerous to just tear the fronts off the matchbooks? Is there a way to "un-engrave" the cutting set? (it's not a very "deep" engraving/etching so I thought it might be a possibility)
I appreciate any input! TIA! :-)
Re: Declutter: personalized items, WWYD?
Do you have a use for all the matches? (burn lot of candles?) If so, I'd go ahead and keep them just because I hate wasting things too. If you really don't want to display them being personalized and all with a name/date that never happened, perhaps you could use some scrapbooking paper and cut squares the size of the matchbook front and cover the personalization. Then I would throw them in a jar/vase for easy access. If you do have or want to buy scrapbooking paper, you might be able to get the free paint color sample strips and cut those to size.
Just an idea...
I would probably donate the cake cutting set as that would be useful to me.
Edit to fix typos.
you might be able to buy envelope labels (office depot/staples) and design a cute monogram (or any kind of "sticker") and place them over the personalized info on the matches.
Not sure what to tell you about the cake cutting set.
Could you take the cake cutting set to Things Remembered or something and see if they can engrave over it?
Then you can donate it without the names/dates on it?
I'd keep the match books, though.

Instead of re-doing all the matchbook covers, what if you put them all in a cute container and then you wouldn't see them?
I'd also try to do the ebay or donate route with the cake cutter. I'm sure there are people that wouldn't really care.
