Say hello to our new family member!

So after years of waffling back and forth, H and I finally decided we are ready take on the responsibility of expanding our family...

Meet Ellie!

image

We picked her up on Friday, and she is SO sweet.  She's 8 months old and is a Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix.  We feel really lucky that she has very few behavioral issues - the only big thing she needs to work on is not barking when we leave.  We went to the gym for an hour yesterday and put her in her crate - she was barking when we left, and was still barking when we returned.  Someone reassure me that she will get used to being alone!

Anyway, we are in love with her and we feel like this was a really good step for us. But it IS strange to be responsible for someone else!

  • Ellie is adorable! Congrats on the new addition. :)

  • So cute!  And yes, the barking should subside once she gets used to her new home.

  • She is really cute!  I haven't had a dog since I was a little kid, so I don't have any advice re: barking.

  • Congrats! What a pretty dog...

Re: separation anxiety, we found using Kongs when we leave (when we were crate training) really helped.  Get a Kong fill it with PB or frozen rice and meat, anything that will make it work for a while to get the treat... she'll focus on the treat instead of you leaving.  It'll also make her associate going into the crate and getting a special treat (something other than a biscuit/cookie)... good luck!

  • Thanks guys!

Thanks for the advice ECHC.  She doesn't seem to mind being in the crate at all as long as we are there. She goes in without trouble at night and she'll even hang out there during the day on her own free will but she just hates to be alone.  We left a kong for her when we went to the gym but she was so distraught that she didn't even touch it while we were gone.  H has the day off today so he is trying to gradually leave for more and more time (a few seconds, 30 seconds, a trip to the mailbox, etc) so hopefully that helps acclimate her and reassure her that we will come back eventually when we leave.

  • She is adorable!! I love big dogs...more to love! And if she's anything like my Callie girl was she will get used to being left alone before you know it. We used chew toys filled with peanut butter to keep her from being too bored and that helped with the barking too. She was so focused on the fun that she didn't care we were leaving.
