Digital SLR recommendations?

I am hoping to upgrade my camera from a simple point and shoot (pocket size) to a digital SLR.  Any recommendations?  I have no experience with a digital SLR, but am wanting to learn.  Smile

Re: Digital SLR recommendations?

  • I've been looking into buying either the Canon Rebel Xsi or the T1i. I'm leaning more towards the T1i because it has HD video.

  • It seems like everyone gravitates to the Cannon Rebel. We have an Olympus Evolt that I love. It's pretty intuitive.

  • I have a nikon d40. They don't make it anymore, its now the d3000. I was trying to decide between a nikon and a canon, so I went to best buy and actually picked them up. The nikon felt better in my hands, so I went with that!

  • I have the rebel T1i and love it. I need to learn how to use it to its best ability though!

  • I have the Nikon D3000 and it's been good. If you spend a little more and go for the D3100, you'll get video capability.

If you plan on upgrading lenses, Canon might be a better option than Nikon. Entry level Nikons require a certain kind of lens in order to auto-focus.

  • We have a Canon Rebel Xs and its decent for a 1st time SLR camera.. I still don't know how to use all of its capabilities.. However I will say that the kit 18-55 lens that comes with most cameras isn't great.. not a far enough zoom. I ended up buying a lens that goes to 200mm and I like it much better!

Also, to learn to use it, I took the 1 night class at Christian Photo.. it was helpful but I actually found this tutorial more helpful:

  • The photography board is good for learning, too.

  • I have a Canon T1i and I love it.  We went with the T1i for the video feature.  We do have a nice videocamera to but it is nice to have the feature on my camera.  The link LittleBug posted has some great tutorials to help get you started.  I still take the majority of my photos in auto mode but I am getting better at using the other features too.
  • I have the Nikon D3100.  I think Costco was having a great bundle price for this, at least they were a few weeks ago.  Also, the photography board will tell you to not buy the lens kit that comes with it and I tend to agree.  I didn't adhere to that advice since I didn't know where to start looking at lenses, but all in all, I'm going to have to get a better telephoto lens.  HTH!
