Gluten Free girls/ moms

I am room mom for Maren's class and there is a little girl (one of Maren's good buddies) in her class who has a gluten allergy. With their Christmas party approaching, I need to think of a treat for the class that this girl can have too. Any tips for fun treat ideas that the class will enjoy? Her mom offered to just bring something in for her but if I can make it so she can be included with the rest of the class in this, I would prefer to do so (Maren told me this girl was sad after soccer one night because she couldn't have the same treat as the rest of the team.) :( TIA!
Tied the knot: 6.19.04 Mommy to 3 awesome kids: Maren 3/06, Tommy 12/07 amd Kolbe 8/09

  • That's so nice of you, I LOVE when moms offer to do that for Peyton's class.  Peyton always has a healthy treat/snack at school and with so many parties and birthdays etc, it is nice when she can have a good treat once in awhile.

You can find gluten free cookie/brownie, etc mixes at Hyvee in the health section....or, a quick google search found this for me:

(can't make it clicky for some reason)

  • Just butting in, but that's really nice of you to do that so she gets to feel included!
  • That is really nice of you to want to make something to include this girl!  It is very isolating to have this condition, especially when there are parties and other gatherings with food.  If you want to do something safe for her I would go the route of ready-to-serve prepackaged food.  The thing is, if you buy and prepare a gluten-free mix of some kind in your own kitchen, it will almost without doubt be cross-contaminated - maybe the pan has a scratch in it (which traps gluten and will contaminate the mix), or you use a wooden spoon (also a contamination factory), or you use a metal spoon from a drawer that had a few bread crumbs in it.  Even if you used flour for something else earlier in the day, it's still hanging in the air and will contaminate it that way.  It sounds ridiculous, but contamination really is that easy!  It would be through nothing malicious or intentional on your part!

Not everyone is this sensitive to cross-contamination, but I wouldn't want to risk it for this girl.  Getting "glutened" is so painful and is never worth whatever led to it.  For my daughter and myself, we could never dream of eating something gluten free that was prepared in a normal kitchen; we've done it before (from very careful, well-meaning family) and paid the price.  For days!  If you'll be making cookies, brownies, donuts, whatever for the class, I would recommend going to the gluten free section at the store and buying the prepared gluten-free equivalent.  Hy-Vee and Whole Foods has a TON to choose from (plus you don't want to pay for an entire class to eat the gluten free goodies - $$$$!).

  • Random, but I was just at Hy-Vee on 156th and Maple, and they have big bags of Jelly Belly "Belly Flops" which are there Jelly Beans that are just a little off in size, color, shape, etc.  The normal bags that size are $7, these were $.99.  Jelly Bellies say they're gluten free, and these were cheap!  Just a thought.
