Flying with baby

We just booked our tickets home to Maine for the holidays (!!!), and it will be the first time we've flown with Will, so I'm looking for travel advice from those who have gone through it before. He'll be about 5 months by then, so we're thinking about taking his carseat with the snap n' go to get him through security and get to the gate, although we're also considering checking the system and just carrying him through the terminal with a sling or the Ergo. Any thoughts either way? Also, for those that have traveled with a breast pump and breast milk, did you have any problems or suggestions for making it easier? I've heard that some places will test the milk (depending on the quantity), and others you just have to claim. Can you take ice packs through as well, or just the breast milk in bottles? TIA!

Re: Flying with baby

  • Off the top of my head, these are the tips I can think of...I'm sure I could come up with a better list once my brain starts working:

    1) Take the stroller/car seat all the way to the gate, for a couple of reasons.  For one, that means that they'll gate-check it, making it less likely to get lost.  For another, if you get lucky and there turns out to be an extra seat on the plane, you may be able to keep your carseat with you.  Ask about being moved to a row with an empty seat as soon as you get to the airport.  (Oh, and be prepared to fold the snap-n-go to put it through the xray.)

    2) It's your right to request a hand inspection of the breastmilk.  You can print the policy from the TSA website and bring it with you in case they give you static.

    3) Extra shirt for you in addition to the usual extra clothes for the bambino.  (In case of spitup, pee, etc...you don't want to be wearing a mess for the whole trip.)

    4) Pacifier clip, extra pacifiers, and pacifier wipes if he uses one.  Airplane floors are gross.

    5) If you have a diaper envelope like the skip hop diaper pronto, pack that for using in the airplane bathroom.  It's too tight in there for a diaper bag.

That's all I've got for now....

I agree with all of this.  It's also nice to have the car seat and the snap and go if you have layovers or have to wait a bit for your flight.  It's a good catch-all for purses, coats, blankets etc.  I was able to get an extra seat for almost all of my flights with Marcus which was great, and it made me feel better to know the carseat and snap and go were on the plane with me.  I brought an extra bottle, and I think it was only tested once with a little strip or something.  Definitely an extra outfit or two for the babe...we had a blowout in the airport :(  We flew with him at 2 months and 6 months, and it was pretty easy both times.  He slept through almost every flight, and no issues with take-off or landing.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate the advice! I'm definitely leaning towards taking the stroller/snap n' go straight through to the gate, and your experiences help solidify that. I do have a Skip Hop diaper clutch, so I'll be sure to pack that for on-plane changes. I had heard from a friend here that we can call up Delta 24 hours before our scheduled flight and request we be seated in the bulkhead seating if it is available so we'll have more leg room too, so we'll be doing that as well. Thanks again!

  • Also, has anyone traveled with your breast pump? How is that commonly handled? What about ice packs for breastmilk bottles?

  • You can bring ice packs as long as they are frozen. Apparently they are considered liquids when thawed. I checked my pump in my suitcase when I flew. If it is in your carry on you will likely have to take it out and put it through the X-ray by itself like you would a laptop

  • I'll add we did overnight diapers with the hope she wouldn't poop and we wouldn't have to change her on the plane. Luckily that worked in our favor and she waited for the layover :) In Boston they let me wear her through the metal detector in the Boba, I just had to let them test my hands, but in Syracuse they looked at me like I was crazy and made me take her out.

  • Is it sad that I can't remember if we flew with our breast pump or not?  geesh it was just yesterday :-)

Ditto what PP mentioned. Do as much diaper changing as you can off the plane.  The bathrooms are TINY.

  • Everyone else already had great comments so I'll just add don't get too worried though if you do have to change on the plane. I was so concerned, but I did pretty well with a large 18month in there! I did just bring wipes and a diaper with me, nothing else to bog me down.

I had to take DD out of the Ergo and scan the Ergo in Boston and Myrtle Beach, but wasn't bad and they helped me put it back on. I brought in a large sippy cup of water, milk and squeeze food that was over the 3 oz limit and no one batted an eye either. If it was obviously for DD they didn't care.

    Goodluck and have fun!
