Is anyone hosting a party for the holidays this year? What's on your menu?
We're having an open house for Christmas and I'll looking for buffet style foods that will hold up all day without much attention. So far I know I'll be making a ham and some pinwheel appetizers.

Re: Holiday Menus
We're hosting Thanksgiving and cooking everything for Christmas at MIL's but we aren't focusing on apps as much. A few ideas though:
Shrimp cocktail, meatballs in the crockpot, cheese ball with crackers, caprese skewers, chex mix, candied almonds/pecans, some kind of salad (chicken/egg/etc) in phyllo cups, hummus and veggies
Since we don't have family in the area, a few years back we started celebrating Thanksgiving with some good friends. We rotate houses and it's just the four us (plus kids now). DW will deep fry a turkey, and make the stuffing, I'll bake pies and make mashed potatoes or maybe something a bit fancier. Our friends will bring the rest of the sides.
It isn't the fanciest of holiday spreads but I wouldn't trade it. :-)
We're not hosting, but doing it with several friends.
I've just thought about Thanksgiving, but I was thinking about making Beer Cheese soup, deviled eggs, an Andes Mint Pie, and some knockoff Red Lobster biscuits.
This sounds absolutely lovely!!
My family is coming here for Thanksgiving. So far we're having turkey, ham, gravy, mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes (I'm sure!), corn, carrots, broccoli salad, regular salad, rolls, various pies & cookies.
I wish I could rent another oven.
Do you have a gas grill?? I cook my turkey in a foil pan on the grill to save oven space. Keep the pan in the center of the grill with the two side burners on and walla! The turkey is just as juicy and tasty as it would be made in the oven!
We're not 100% sure on Christmas plans yet, but we'll be doing our own thanksging dinner and inviting a few people from our new duty station to join us. So far it's- turkey, either mashed potatoes or potato salad, stuffing, greenbeans casserole, broccoli and cheese, candied yams, rolls and pecan pie.

This is genius!
Oh we will be trying this!!
It will change your life!
My best is advice, based on impressive holiday parties that I've been to is to come up with a theme.
I went to one where the hostess had nearly an entire room full of appetizers. One wall was sweets, the table was a lot of middle-eastern themed things, then the normal shrimps, cold-cuts and cheese, and then beverages on the other side.
I think I saw someone else mentioned to do a bunch of grilled items. I've seen a variation of that done. Sky's the limit and you can make your theme as broad or as restricted as you like.
Remember you can try to extend the life of some things (especially non-dairy items) by attempting to cradle them in ice. There's fun things that you can do such as ice rings and bowls made of ice that can help.
Tabbouleh, hummus and veggies, pieces of flatbread with savory topping like herbs or veggies. All different kinds of salsa. I'm not sure how long fondues last if they're the kind with little candles under them. A cheese ball with crackers, egg or spring rolls, dry party mixes like chex mix, nuts.
Are you looking more for things that could be main entrees or side dishes as part of a regular sit-down meal?
I'm looking for a mix of both. People will be in and out all day so it's hard to say whether they'll be really hungry or just want to pick.
