spot treat hardwoods?

I'm not sure what I did but whatever it was now have whitish/worn spots in the high-traffic areas (you can literally see the mop strokes in front of the refrigerator); it's like something stripped a layer off the floors in these areas.  Strange that it only appears though in the high-traffic areas (including the usual path on the stairs). UGH.  The rest of the floor looks normal.  These are 4 year old floors in a new house.

Is there a way to spot-treat these areas to match the rest of the floors again?  A polish maybe?

Any thoughts on what might have caused this?  Maybe too wet of a mop? Product?  I've used:  Orange Glo, vinegar/water, Murphys Oil
