Kindle ? (I know this has been discussed before, sorry)
I'm thinking about getting a Kindle. I've been trying to figure out what living abroad would mean for that, and I've been googling, but can't really figure it all out. I obviously want to get books from the US Amazon store, not whatever swedish store may or may not exist. I have a US address and a credit card. So will it work?
Thanks!

Re: Kindle ? (I know this has been discussed before, sorry)
Yep! It will totally work as a US Kindle would. The only difference is that you pay a service fee (for using whispernet) to wirelessly download stuff. However, you can download to your computer and then transfer via USB cable for free.
At least that's how it worked 6 months ago. . . .

Yes, it will defintiely work.
I have a US bank account and address, and use my US Amazon.com account to buy Kindle books. They get wireless delivered to me here in the UK -- NO FEE. To my knowledge, there is NEVER a fee to use Whispernet, even internationally.
If you happen to find yourself in a country where they can't offer Whispernet wireless service, then you can always download books to your computer and USB them over to your Kindle (this is what I had to do on a few deployments to Afghanistan, and it's super easy and works great).
This. You can download for free using wireless whispernet. If you get the 3G Kindle and download that way, that's when there's a fee if you're out of the country, as I understand it. My Kindle is registered on amazon.de and the only disadvantage I notice is that not all of the free books offered on amazon.com are offered in Germany. And the weird thing - I use library lending (awesome!!), and to return the books I have to go to my amazon.com account manage my kindle to do it. Amazon.de doesn't have an option to return books yet since they don't have library lending here yet. If you're registered at amazon.com then you don't need to worry about any of that, though :-)
I know there's a still a fee for international delivery of subscriptions ($4.99/week: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200375590&#intservice), but it's nice to hear that they did away with delivery for individual books.
Could be a fee for subscriptions (magazines, newspapers, etc), but I've never paid a fee to download a book via 3G (whispernet) from the UK.
thanks so much!
I don't know what whispernet is, it is just how you get the books on your Kindle?
I wasn't really considering a 3G one bc I don't really think I need it, so hopefully there won't be any extra fees. That's what I'm trying to make sure of!
so if I buy it in the US, get it shipped to me at my sister's apt when I'm there for xmas, and register it on amazon.com, then bring it back here to Sweden, I should be good to go, right?
Whispernet is the 3G wireless delivery service. If you don't get a 3G version, then you can just use WiFi. I, personally, like 3G because it gives me freedom to download books whenever I want, not just when I'm at home. It's nice to be able to browse for books while I'm sitting in the airport, or in a hotel that doesn't have free WiFi (and let's face it, free WiFi is a thing of the past in most places, which limits you to buying books only from home).
But to answer your other question, yes, if you buy it from the US (bestbuy.com, amazon.com, etc) and have it delivered to your sister's house in the states, then pick it up while you're home for Christmas, you'll be good to go:-) Just make sure, when you get back to Sweeden, that you go to amazon.COM, not whatever version of amazon they have in Sweeden:-)
I have a Nook, and I use it through hotspotshield with a US address and credit card number. I download books for Kindle, nook, etc without a problem.
I don?t know what whispernet is, but I am off to check it out.
I have a US kindle registered on the US site using my UK address and credit card. I've actually switched my location several times (to get books unavailable on the US site or UK site) and there were never any problems. So if you find you want a book from the Swedish Amazon site, you can do it.
I use the 3G constantly - for checking google maps while travelling and keeping up on email. It was endlessly helpful while we were in India and had trouble with our train. I've never paid to download anything and I've bought books all over the world. The only place it hasn't worked is Estonia, for whatever reason it wouldn't pick up a 3G signal.
I couldn't recommend the kindle more, it is my favourite electonic purchase in years. But... if you're getting the brand new, tiny one, I don't think it's worth paying the extra for the 3G as the web browsing on it is terrible (since there's no keyboard). It just means a bit more planning on when you buy books.

Good to know! A lot of the books I like are only sold in the UK, and have thought about getting one to use just for the UK but this would be a lot easier!
