Have any of you purchased a car overseas?
Can you tell me about your experiences with loans and selling/shipping it before you left?

My family have always had cars in each country that we've lived. We've never shipped our cars to the next place because we just didn't see the need to...most of the time we were on an expat package which gave us the ability to sell the car and recoup some of the loss from the company.
When I moved from the states back over the pond I sold my car because I didn't want to have to make all the changes to get it to conform to the EU standards. I took that money and my last few paychecks and bought my new car over here outright.
I have never had a loan out to buy a car, if I didn't have the money for it I didn't get it. BUT different countries have different systems with loans. When I moved I thought I would get a small loan to get my first car to build up credit. Turns out there is no such system here! Thus no reason to take out a loan. My first time borrowing money from a bank was for the mortgage on our building ground!
We bought a used car for cash when we first moved here. In the spring we sold it and bought new. We bought it through my H's business, so no advice about credit etc...
My H bought a car here when he was a teen and when his family moved to Canada, they shipped it in their container. That was over 10 years ago though, so I'm not sure they were checking norms and emissions then.
I am jealous of your companies who help you with this sort of thing!
We?d do a loan through USAA. They offer regular loans through the dealership and unsecured loans for used cars. We do not have the money to purchase a car out right, so it?s our only option.
Would you be purchasing it to drive in your current location or purchasing it "road ready" for the US.
My DH wanted to ship his car to the States from Germany about 10 years ago. I don't know what its like now, but at the time, it would have cost us about $6,000 to make the appropriate changes to the car in order to make it driveable in the US.
But, I also know that the big car companies here sell "US road ready" cars, that people often pick up, drive around Europe with a final destination of the shipping port.

It depends how long you plan to use and if you want to sell or ship if you move. We bought a terrible used car for cash that lasted 1 year an 9 months.
