The BMI chart

Does anyone else think it is a bit ridiculous?

Yes, I know I am overweight.  BUT according to the BMI chart I am somewhere around 35 lbs over the top weight and over 65 lbs from the low end.  I cannot imagine what I would look like if I was 65 lbs smaller then I am now.  Yes I don't fall into the "petite" frame that would put me on the low end of the scale, but still.

People I met in college have seen pictures of me from high school (granted I was a three sport athlete then) and said I look "too skinny".  The weight I remember being back then is technically the highest it says I should be for my height on the BMI scale.

And we wonder where people get their body issues from?

Re: The BMI chart

  • The BMI charts are ridiculous. According to them, DH is overweight, based on his height and weight. In reality, DH runs and works out on a regular basis....to the point that he is in the best shape now that he's ever been in, and he used to be a power lifter in high school and played football. I don't see how you can be considered "overweight" with a 6 pack.  All of that to say that I don't give much thought to the BMI charts.

Anyways, just my 2 cents. :)

  • Last time I was at the doc the scale said an insane # that I never ever wanted to see...ever!  Well, that was the last # I know I weighed so I'm going to go off that.  According to that I am obese.  You have seen me in pics...do I look obese?!  No.  I know I am overweight and based on the height & weight chart I am somewhere in the range of 25 - 62lbs overweight depending on what frame I am.  I think medium so I am probably in the 30lb overweight range.  I've lost some weight since then so I'm not so high up on that dumb BMI but I only went down 1%.

  • BMI is my biggest pet peeve with the fitness world.  For the general population, sure, mildly useful for a quick reference.

IMO, even for some of the athletic types on this board, I don't think it would ring accurate.

In undergrad I did the Bod-Pod (a near gold standard next to hydrostatic/underwater weighing) and was told that 115lbs of me is absolutely necessary.  I'm 5'5"... and have read my ideal body weight is anywhere from 120-150 (image below from Pinterest).  So if 115 lbs of me is absolutely necessary, that only gives me 5lbs of "extra".. HA! With "acceptable" body fat percentages, an "acceptable weight" for me would be 145. According to BMI tables that would put me just into (higher range) of the "normal weight" BMI.

BMI sucks.  It is not worth the weight the fitness community gives it.

  • I definitely don't go off the BMI chart.  I base my weightloss (when I try) on how I feel and how my clothes fit.

I have always been more of the "athletic build" type.  That chart you just posted has my desired weight as the higher number for my height.  I am fine with that.  I have never wanted to be ultra skinny and could care less if I was.  I would prefer to be happy and healthy.  Right now I am not doing so well with the healthy part, but am working on it weight wise.

  • um yah, me 101 lbs?!?

    A) that is unrealistic

    B) I would look sick

    C) that is unrealistic

    Yes

I seriously fear what I would look like if I weighed 145.  I was really starting to look the way I looked at 160, let alone another 15 pounds?!

  • Count me in as a hater. I am 15in lbs from obese onBMI. Now, I could afford to lose a few lbs, but my 'fit' weight from years ago is still only 5 lbs below overweight. And I was quite fit then. Even when I ran NYC and looked pretty good :)I I was a few lbs into BMIs overweight.
  • Request to join the BMI haters club!

My WiiFit tells me I'm obese also. Oh, and it does that lovely "boing" sound as it plumps up your Mii. Nice hey? Really, I know I need to loose some weight, but as pp's stated, really, it's not a very realistic.

  • Not a fan either. I do use it as a guideline when patients ask me what they should weigh, or want to know if they are OW. But I also tell them to take it with a grain of salt because it is far from perfect. I always tell them that the BMI equation would say Arnold Schwartzenager is OW when he clearly isn't (or wasn't..I think we all picture his young muscular self). Based on BMI I am on the verge of OW, and Brian is obese. Oh, there is this BMI wheel at work (spin to line up height and weight, BMI appears in the window). It's categories are normal, over weight, obese, super obese, and super super obese. Seriously, sounds like a kid made the wheel!
  • Totally hate the BMI chart too-- my dear friend brought up my BMI once with me when I was pregnant and I almost smacked her. I have too much weight on me, yes.... but my BMI puts me at "obesity". I hate that.
  • oh and I'm only 15 lbs from the "overweight category" and I wouldn't consider most people who were that height and weight overweight
