How to respond to "when are you available to interview"?

When HR emails you, and asks about your availability, what should you say?  I'm currently unemployed, so my day revolves around applying for jobs, blogging, netflix, and random errands/chores.  So basically my schedule is 100% free for interviewing.

Should I tell the HR person that she/he can call me anytime?  Or does that come off as desperate?  It's kind of like dating- you don't want to come off as too available.

Should I arbitrarily choose a time frame?  In the past, I've said things like "I'm free Mon-Wed", even though I'm really free for the whole week.  I just want them to call me earlier.

  • When you're looking for a job, there's no such thing as looking "too desperate".

It's not like dating at all - if you want an interview, make it as convenient as possible for them to interview you. Playing hard to get doesn't win you any points when job hunting, especially when you're unemployed.

OK, that's reassuring to hear.  However, it is sort of sad/weird to have to tell somebody "I'm free anytime this week".  I'm essentially admitting that I have nothing significant going on...  Are you sure they're not silently judging me for that?

  • Seriously, don't overthink this. You are not the only unemployed person in the world looking for a job. And saying "I"m available Mon-Wed" when their only open interview date is Thursday = you shooting yourself in the foot for the job.

"I have no scheduling conflicts this week/next week"

"What dates/times did they have in mind? I can check my schedule real quick and get back to you"

    "I'm available immediately"

  • I usually say, "I'm pretty flexible, what time or times are available for you?" then make it work.  I'd rather inconvenience myself than not seem like I'm interested in the position.

  • How about "I can be available anytime this week"

Even when I already have a job, my answer to "When are you available for an interview" is "Anytime, I will clear my schedule".

This is a perfect response.  I love it when people give me open availability.  Plus the "clear your schedule" side shows that you are interested and willing to do what you need to do.  If someone tells me I'm available on Tuesday and Thursday from 12-1 I may not be able to schedule them for weeks depending on the manager.

Thanks!  You guys are so helpful.  I know I'm over-thinking this, but it's an issue I kept running into.

Yup.  I'd call and say "I am available at your convenience, my schedule is very flexible right now".
