"Not Responding" Error Message in Droid 2

I have the Motorola Droid 2 (R2D2 version if that matters), and yesterday I started getting an error message in my browser, facebook, and messaging app that states "Activity Browser (in application Browser) is not responding" and prompts me to either force close or wait.  I have googled the issue and tried the different solutions I've come across (i.e. deleted long message threads, removing the photos from my gallery, deleting browswer history/cache/cookies).  It's made my phone run much faster, but the force close issue still shows up.

Also, my phone did recently automatically update itself, but that was about a month ago.

Please tell me someone has dealt with this and knows a solution!  I know I can contact Verizon to troubleshoot, but that's my last resort.  I'm hoping someone on here will have an answer.  TIA!

Re: "Not Responding" Error Message in Droid 2

  • I haven't had this particular problem, but DST caused some issues for Droid users with the latest Gingerbread update.  One of the fixes I found online was to go to Settings --> Date and Time, uncheck the Automatic option, choose some random time zone, and recheck Auto.  The steps may be slightly different on the Droid 2.

Basically the phone is having trouble with the time zone change, and if you reset it, it fixes the problem.  The most common issue this causes is a huge battery drain, but there are a smattering of other 'symptoms' reported.  Not sure if this is causing your issue or not, but it takes two seconds to fix and doesn't hurt anything, so it's worth a shot.  The other fix is to restore factory settings, but I'm hoping that's not necessary for either of us!

  • Thanks for the response. That's so weird that DST is messing up phones. I tried your suggestion but I kept getting the message. After a lot of playing around, it seems that the issue is with Swype, the text-input thing. I went into system settings, under language and keyboard, and changed my input method to Swype. This seems to have fixed things, though the pop up along the bottom that guesses what I'm typing no longer appears. Very strange.

  • I'm glad you figured it out anyway!  I don't use Swype so I never would have thought of that.  Usually if I can't figure something out, I turn my phone off and back on.  If that doesn't work, I google.  There are some pretty active Android forums out there!

  • the fix is easy. Restore to  defaults.  I had this  issue.
  • It happens when the program gets stuck because the CPU is being used up by other apps or processes in the background.

Easy fix = use a task killer (DH uses Tasker, I use System Panel Lite), and periodically end all of the background tasks.

Also - go into the settings, then Manage Applications, and clear the caches of your apps.  Just like an internet browser, all the apps use a cache of temp files and they do not clear them automatically.  Go in and clear them out and your phone will run a lot faster.

You may also need to start rebooting your phone more often if that is something you don't already do.  You can use the app App to SD if you have an SD card as well, this allows the app to run from the SD card instead of the hard drive, which saves a lot of memory and helps it run faster.
