Glucose Test Question

My new office does it differently than my old office so I'm looking for opinions.

With Nolan, I had to fast after midnight and go into the office at 8am, drink the stuff, wait an hour then get blood drawn.

This time, they gave me the drink at my last appointment, told me to drink it an hour before my appt. time and then they'd draw blood as soon as I get there. They said I could eat beforehand, as my appointment is at 2:25pm.

My question- won't the food I eat before impact the results? At what time should I eat and should I avoid anything in particular?

I know all offices do it differently so I figure someone on here has done it the same way my new office is. Thanks! :)

Re: Glucose Test Question

  • My office doesn't require a fast either, they do say not to eat anything with carbs (white breads, sugars, etc) for at least two hours before.  I would eat a high protein lunch and then just be sure not to snack beforehand and you should be ok!

  • I ate before my test with both girls and passed.

With Taryn, I had cereal and orange juice within the hour of my test. With Tessa, I had lunch (pizza) about 2 hours before the test, and then a snack in between lunch and the test.

  • I was not required to fast either.

I was given the drink at a dr.'s appt., and was told to drink it before my next like you were.

I honestly think if you are going to pass you will, and if you're not, you won't regarless of how you try to "cheat" they system.

  • I didn't have to fast eiher. I had the lab order form, they gave me the drink. I drank it in the morning. Went to the blood lab, told them when I drank it. They called me in an hour after I drank it for a blood draw.
  • I didn't fast before mine. I have no advice. I had oatmeal(with brown sugar) and an egg the morning of my GD test and everything turned out fine.

  • For my first test, I had to ask for it at the registration desk, drink it in the waiting room, and then I had my regular appointment.  Once all of that was done (weight, BP, urine test, doppler, regular doctor chat, measurements, etc.), the drew my blood and I left.  No fasting beforehand.

I had to go back for the 3 hour, though, and with that, I couldn't eat or drink anything after midnight.  That was probably one of the worst mornings in recent memory.  Haha!

  • They may also have different cut off numbers that they look for based on whether you were fasting or not... IDK. where's Razz or Cheryl our resident nurses??

  • That is how my office did it, they just told me to fast for an hour.

  • I was told to eat about 1-2 hours before my appt (where they gave me the drink and then took my blood an hour later).  They gave me a list of foods I could eat, basically eggs, cheese, avoid carbs/sugars.
  • So basically avoid carbs & sugars. Okay, thanks ladies!

I didn't pass with Nolan (though I did pass the 3 hour... which, yes Emma, was terrible!) so I'm not sure what to expect this time.

  • My office didn't require a fast either.  I was told to try to avoid carbs the day of the blood draw and try to eat foods high in protein, the suggested eggs.  I was worried about the glucose test because my sister has type 1 and type 2, while not genetic, runs in my family.

I still at my cereal for breakfast and had a glass of juice.  For lunch I had some eggs and veggies.  I think I still had fruit and a granola bar for a snack.  I tried not to limit my diet too much, because if I had it I didn't want to totally change how I eat unless I had to.
