Help on a monitor

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in January.  I thought we had decided on a video monitor for the babys room, but we've started to hear way more pros/cons on it all.  Some say it's not worth it, just hear the voices is fine and cheaper.  Others are saying to upgrade to a motion one too....anyone have any thoughts that they'd like to share....  What kind did you get????

Re: Help on a monitor

  • With Sophia we just got a cheap Graco one that worked well enough and is still going strong.  We do get a decent amount of white noise out of it, though, which can be annoying.  In order to avoid interference this time around we got the Sony BabyCall and I can't say enough good things about it.  Its amazingly clear with no static whatsoever and is very sensitive.  I didn't feel the need for a video monitor and would be too paranoid about false alarms with a motion one so the voice only works great for us.

  • Another recommendation for the Sony BabyCall. We really like ours. We had originally received the Phillips Avent monitor that we had registered for but after testing it out I wasn't happy with the volume. I didn't feel I could hear Lauren without holding the parent receiver to my ear. It is possible we had a faulty system- but either way I returned it and got the Sony BabyCall for less than half the price of the expensive AVENT one.

  • After tons of good reviews online, and glowing reviews on here, we upgraded to a Sony BabyCall for baby #2.  LOVE it!  Very sensitive, good volume control, durable.  My only con is that I do get interference from our phones and our clocks (the clocks in our bedroom are the kind that synch with the atomic worldclock thing), so the monitor has to be a certain amount of space away from them or we get "feedback" or static/whine.

With DS1, we had a Graco iVibe, which I don't think they make anymore.  It wasn't very durable, or I'm just a clutz.  After one drop, it had horrible static, bad range, and constant interference.  It still technically works, but so badly that I couldn't tell what the noise was on the monitor until crying happened.  With the BabyCall I can hear when DS2 starts to roll/wiggle/move when waking up to give me a head start on going to get him before a full wake up occurs on his part.

  • I'm just alittle bit of a crazy mom. With that said, we went big with monitors. We have both the Angelcare movement monitor and a video monitor. I love both and could not live without them! For the next baby, I'm definitely picking up a Snuza Baby monitor.

First, I loved having them both bc I was so worried about SIDS. Also, G is such a light sleeper, so I could never just peak in and check on her. I loved being able to look at the monitor to make sure she didn't have a blanket over her head, leg stuck out of the crib, etc. I also like to look at the monitor when I think she's awake, just to make sure. Sometimes it sounds like she wakes up but she's just talking in her sleep.

I still have the Angelcare movement monitor on her too. It's just gives me POM. When she takes super long naps, I always start to worry. It's nice to know she's ok.

So, if you're a worry wart like me, I suggest buying a video and movement monitor. It was the one thing that I don't regret spending alot of money on!

  • We also have the Sony Baby Call.  Our first was a general Graco monitor.  When it died shortly after DD2 was born, I purchsed the Sony Baby Call.  My favorite feature is the option to only hear sound from it when the girls are fussing or holler for us.  It has a sound sensitivity option that picks up voices.  They listen to a radio at night, which makes it difficult for us to sleep.  I like that the monitor will pick up them crying but not the radio so it only goes off if they need us.
