Rate a restaurant - any restaurant

Rate a restaurant you've been to lately.  Good or bad.  New to you or old family favorite.

Mine is Sopranos at the West End in SLP.  The ambiance was nice, the food was decent but not great, but it was terribly overpriced.  My $18.50 butternut squash cappelletti (like a ravioli) should not have been more than $12.50.  It was a tiny portion.  We had 1 cocktail, 1 beer, 1 (tiny) mediocre entree, and one (tiny) mediocre appetizer for $50.  No

I would go back with a Groupon but wouldn't go back if I had to pay full price.

Any places you'd recommend?  Or any places you would avoid?

Re: Rate a restaurant - any restaurant

  • We went to Heartland in dowtown St Paul about 2 months ago.  It was excellent - expensive though.  We both had just one drink, both had salads, a main and we split a dessert.  With tip it was about $150.  But SO good.  Nice sized portions and so yummy!  Toward the end of dinner, I noticed that Garrison Keillor was sitting at the table beside us.  I can't say I'm a fan of his show, but it was neat none the less.

I also really like The Strip Club, also in St Paul.  Smaller venue, excellent steak.  Again, a bit more pricey, not as much as Heartland though, but worthwhile.  Don't go here if you don't like steak!

  • I'll rate two Mexican restaurants I've been to lately:

Rosa Mexicana - in downtown Mpls. It's fairly new, I think. We went there with a group and didn't pick the place. It's a chain, which should have been the first clue that it's not stellar. The service was really bad - orders were screwed up, the waitress had a terrible snotty attitude, and she was so mad when we asked to split the bill since there were 5 couples (we asked before we even ordered to try to make it easier for her). The food was okay, but so overpriced. $19 for 2 enchiladas? $18 for chicken tacos? $14 for a chips & guacamole appetizer (the guacamole was terrible, by the way, it was super bland). For those prices, I expected really great food, and it wasn't great at all, just okay.

Las Tortillas - in Rosemount. It's a little restaurant in a strip mall, and the food and service are great. We've been there 3-4 times and have always loved our food, it's really fresh. It's cheap too, $6.95 for an enormous burrito or an order of three big tacos, and free chips & salsa. Cheaper than Chipotle! Drinks are inexpensive too - margaritas are $4.25 full-price, cheaper during happy hour. It's our new favorite neighborhood spot.

  • Sopranos mist be a hit or miss place. You're the second person i've come across who wasn't very impressed, but for us it was really good. I agree the pricin is high though. What a bummer.

Good to know, I've been wanting to check this place out. maybe I'll wait a bit now.

I recently went to McCoy's Public House in SLP. 6:30 on a Wednesday, 5 adults plus a baby, no waiting and we were seated in a room in the back. It was a little strange since it was our group and a couple who looked like they were on a date and the rest of the tables were empty. Maybe they put us back there because of the baby, who knows, but I didn't really get a feel of the rest of the restaurant.

I wanted comfort food, so I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup and it was delicious. Fairly large sandwich though, I almost felt guilty eating the whole thing but it was that good. I didn't even finish my soup. Down side, I really wanted a side caesar salad instead of fries, and they don't have caesar salads! I was pretty disappointed and thought it kind of strange to not have them on their menu.

I paid around $23 including tip for my meal and a glass of wine, so pretty typical I think. I would go back just because the menu was fairly large and looking back I can't believe I didn't get the ice cream sandwich for dessert.

  • My H and I went to Bucca about a week ago for date night. I know it's a popular place, but I just wanted to mention how great the service was. We went to the St. Paul location. I made a reservation on OpenTable and we were seated immediately. It was quite busy so it took a min for the waiter to greet us, but he was great otherwise. We split a salad and entree and the food came very quickly, even with the restaurant being full. The waiter came to check on us several times and brought extra bread when we ran out. I hadn't been there in years and I was really impressed with the service and food.

  • The most recent place I've been was The Local, and it was delicious, as always.  I'll admit that I mostly drank my dinner, but we did split a few appetizers, since it was happy hour.  I had the reuben rolls and they were amazing.  I don't remember my total bill, but I remember being surprised that it was as affordable as it was.

    Highly recommend it. :)

  • I will put a word in for Pat's Tap. It just opened in South Mpls on 35th and Nicollet, same ownership as Bryant Lake and Red Stag. Was fabulous. Great beer list, tasty food. We had goat cheese fritters that were amazing. And I had a bacon burger. The bacon was crumbled up inside the burger. I know - not for everyone, but it was amazing. And - they have skee ball. So how can you go wrong?

  • Frankie's Pizza in Chanhassen. We got delivery the other night and they totally screwed up our order and it took forever to get and was cold.

We called to let the manager know - ended up speaking with the manager who said they must not have given us all our bags. Did not apologize and then said they would send us a gift card - which they never did.

This is after we called one time and they never delivered the food and said they lost the order.

Will never ever eat there again. 2 major strikes - you're out!

-We went to Oceanaire last week and it was amazing as always. We went for our anniversary and they made us personalized menus and yummy pumpkin baked alaska!

  • Went to Imperial Room in the Warehouse District for happy hour last Friday. Absolutely fantastic! A great variety of appetizers, all are either half price or $5, and drinks are on special as well. The food was really good, we had wings, fish tacos, walleye fingers, and even a ball park pretzel.

Two weeks ago went to Thom Pham's Wondrous Azian Kitchen, and that was good too. It was our second time there, the first time was about a year ago and wasn't as good. I got a scallop entree with veggies, and DH got something with steak, and both were really good. I'd go back again.

  • The hubby and I and my in-laws went to the Red Stag (minneapolis) for my BIL's 30th birthday.

Drinks were impressive (but pricey), my husbands bloody mary had a small MEAL of garnish (beef jerky, celery, peppers, etc)- and I was impressed.

However, I ordered the pork chop with grape ketchup and the pork chop was WAY overcooked. Hardly edible. Everything else on my plate was average. Portions were small (for the price).

Waitress was OK but not overly concerned if we needed refills, etc.

I don't know what our total bill was since it was FIL's treat. But my meal alone would have been around $21.

We went to Rosa Mexicano the other day for lunch and it was horrible! I will not go back. We got guacamole which is made table side - it was ok, not great. Then I was suppose to get a cobb salad but they just brought out lettuce - plain?? I asked about it and nothing happened. The waiter never came by - nothing. Finally 20 minutes later I spoke to the waiter and he was rude. I stated I didn't have time to eat and he threw the whole thing - bowls, etc in a box, on the table and then expected us to pay the full amount! This is after being there almost 1 and 1/2 hours for lunch and not getting anything to eat but guacamole.

I ended up getting the salad comped but it was such horrible service and medicore food at very high prices. I can't see this place being open for long - not when Barrio and Masa are also downtown.
