What would you do (job related)?

Need some job advice here!

I was laid off this week by one of the school's I teach at.  On top of that, the main school I teach at is going through a lot of issues.  They decided to forgo the accreditation process we've been going for over the past 8 years, several full timers are leaving, and we just recently hired a new president.  I have been part time for almost 4 years now.  They filled the full time positions with outside applicants without opening up the positions to the part timers.  They are opening up a full time adviser position to us, however if I apply for it and get it that transitions me out of teaching.  I've also been very unhappy at this job as I don't get treated equally as the only female and minority in our department, so I don't even know if I should apply.  My dept chair told me with all of the changes I may only get 1 class or I could get 6 in the spring, he doesn't even know at this point. I normally teach 4 or 5 courses.

In light of all of this I'm really hoping to hear back from the opportunity in NYC or some of the other ones I have down here.  But what would you do about the adviser spot if you were in my situation?

  • I would definitely apply - for quite a few reasons: 1) you wouldn't HAVE to take it if you got it, 2) the more jobs you apply to, the higher the likelihood of you getting one!, and 3) you really have nothing to lose by applying.

Good luck - sorry things are sucky for you right now! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I agree with Nor, there's really no harm in applying.

I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch. I have my fingers crossed for you for the NYC position!

  • Yeah that makes sense.  I guess I was struggling since the school seems like a sinking ship at this point haha.  Perhaps it won't be so bad if I'm not directly in the department anymore...yet I'm still hoping for NYC!  Fingers crossed!
