Christmas Trees - poll

Re: Christmas Trees - poll

  • We had a real tree for a couple years growing up. I remember the horrible mess from the pine needles all over the floor and the fact that it made me sneeze from the minute it came through the door, until the moment it left. It's a fake tree for us!

  • I prefer a real tree. Typically one that isn't thick with branches. I like the scraggly charlie brown trees. Growing up we typically had real trees.

  • Real tree, I love the way they smell. We've only lived in tiny apartments so far, so we always got little trees. Only one or two feet tall at most. Now that we live in a house... We might still get a mini tree, less mess :)

  • I prefer a real tree, but we have a fake one Sad

That being said, I don't think we're even going to put up the fake one this year because we won't be here.

  • Growing up we ALWAYS had a real tree. We'd go to the tree farm as a family and pick one out and my Dad would saw it down - it was soooooooo fun, such a great tradition.

Overseas though I only had a real tree in our London flat once, a 'small' one I wheeled home in a bucket from the tube station seller on their trolley :)

The last few years I've just had a tiny fake one, as we didn't have the space for anything else

I don't know about in our house now though..... as much as I'd LOVE a real tree, I'm leaning towards fake just for the convenience.....

  • We usually had a real one when I was younger. I always enjoyed picking it out sweeping up the bristles and the smell is devine. In New York they chop off two or three inches off the bottom so you have a fresh stub like flowers. I always took the left over stump and put in near the radiator to spread the smell.
  • We had a fake one. But it looked like a real one. Nothing like the ones you see now. It was bought in Germany and made in Germany. It would hurt as much as a real one. Now I see they still make those but they are at least $300.

My parents bought a real one  the year my brother was born and it was a nightmare. They didn't have the no mess varieties at the time and preventing a 6-month old from eating thorns was a challenge. So they decided to buy a fake one to get rid of this problem.

  • We always had real ones when I was growing up - my mom still does - to my dismay as I'm actually allergic to them. I can stand them outside (in the woods) but inside I get all itchy.

So ever since I could decide, I've had fakes. Last year we bought a second one and then my dad bought a miniature one for the guest room as well (I found that out about a week after Christmas, hehehe)

  • We always had a real tree. Mom planted a bunch of trees when we were really little, so we always got to go pick one of our trees! Unfortunately here in my mini-apartment we'll have to have a fake tree.
  • I'm a SS because my "get" and "prefer" are different. We get real because DH is xmas tree snob like that, but I prefer fake for several reasons 1) way less mess, 2) no watering, 3) no worrying about it drying out and starting a fire, and 4) no having to search the internet 5x until the ad for xmas tree disposal finally comes up and then having to wait until they come around on like April 15th (no, actually it's usually mid-January, but still.).

Growing up we had a fake "snow-covered" tree upstairs that was the formal tree with all silver and red decorations and plain white lights. That was in the room where we had company, and I loved sitting in there at night and staring at it because it was so peaceful-looking. Downstairs we had a real tree that my brother and I decorated with all the colorful ornaments and lights, which was where our presents were on xmas morning. So I don't know where my preference comes from.

  • I love real trees, we've always had them growing up. I don't understand why you would want to get a plastic tree that will eventually go into a landfill when you can get a real one...but that's just my opinion and I'm ok with people having fake ones.

This year will be my first year as an adult with a tree in our house. I've finally convinced DH that real is the way to go :) I'm super excited!

  • At my parent's house, we haven't have a Christmas tree since I was in high school (20 years ago), and we stopped decorating other than a nativity scene about 15 years ago.

This year I want a tree, but I am not sure.  I would prefer a real one, but the real ones I have see around here are scraggly Charlie Brown ones and not the lush spruce-type trees I am used to.  I do not want a scraggly tree.

I do not know what we are going to do -- DH is in favor of a deep purple fibre-optic one, but I don't know.  The classiest tree I have ever seen was a 1950's gold aluminum tree with teal balls, placed in the center of a huge picture window in a buff brick house with teal trim (the tree matched the colors of the house exactly).  And I cannot find anything that looks close enough to that classy for my taste.

I don't mind being held to a higher standard; I mind being held to a lower one. (Sam Seaborn, The West Wing)

  • Growing up, we had an artificial tree, because my mom was told that she was allergic to real trees when she was a little kid.  But, all I heard growing up was how much she would have loved a real tree.  So, when I was 16, I ordered a real tree, and it turned out, she had no problems with it.  I now force my father to buy a tree when we're home at Christmas.  Surprisingly, it isn't so easy to get a lush, beautiful tree here either, they're rather sparse.  But, this year, I am on the search for the perfect tree for our house, especially since we won't be in the States this Christmas.

  • Growing up, we had both.  My mom is a Christmas tree fanatic, so we usually have 3 trees in the house: one in the living room, one in the kitchen (yes, you heard right...the kitchen), and one in the dining room in the back of the house.  We had a real tree a few times growing up, but we also had fake ones as well

DH and I have had a fake one since we were together.  It's even pre-lit!  I think we'll probably stick wtih this tree until it dies (meaning the lights go out), and then who knows.  The idea of having to water a tree, plus the mess, is sort of off-putting, but the smell would be lovely.

We got a really nice one last year in Germany. I want to say it was at Edeka. We shoved it inside our Peugeot 205 hatchback and crossed it over the boarder. Still don't know if that's legal. We specifically picked the closed boarder control since we went to get a goose and some other groceries.

  • In London, we have a fake tree - real ones that I like are just way too expensive.  If I lived in NE USA, I'd get a real one as they'd be easier to find/get and less expensive for a nice one.  We'll probably have this one for years.

  • As a kid in New England, we had the real thing.  That's what I prefer, but we've got a faker.  Fake's just easier here (less mess, less cost, etc).  Plus, it's just me and H on Xmas, so no need to get too decked out (pardon the bad pun :)).

  • Real trees are nice - if they are someone else's. I like the convenience of a fake one though. You can put it up and take it down whenever you want without having to worry about needles everywhere and drying out/fire hazard.

  • Real and now that we are back in the US we can even go cut it down ourselves. We found a place in London one year to cut ourselves, too. I've never not had a real tree.
  • I've only had a real tree twice, but hardly any needles fell out. I don't quite understand the complaints of 'messy' real trees. It doesn't seem much different from a fake tree except you have to water it.

  • I Love real trees, well the smell but we should (if all goes to plan) have just moved into our new home and for the first time in my adult life I will have carpets and i just dont want to deal with the mess.

So i will have a fake tree and maybe burn some Christmas tree smelling candles :P
