What are you making for Thanksgiving?

Are you responsible for the whole meal or just side dishes or desserts? How much wiggle room do you have to try out new recipes or do you have to follow a family recipe?

We just divided out dishes and I got rolls and green bean casserole. Our family follows the same recipes to a freaking T every.single.year so it's not like I can try out any new recipes without getting a ton of flack. So French's green bean casserole recipe and my great grandma's roll recipe it is!

Re: What are you making for Thanksgiving?

  • Im going to my Nanny's and she makes it all. I might bring a pecan brownie pie, but I don't have to. If I go to my Aunt's on my mom's side, I'm usually in charge of dessert. They tend to stick their noses up at anything new, but once they try it, they like it. I made this pudding dessert a couple years ago that was so good, but an absolute mess. They still pick on me for that.

  • I'm making everything but the turkey and mashed potatoes, I think. My brother likes to do the potatoes, and mom insists on doing the turkey, then transports it sloshing all over the place. It's really kind of ridiculous, but so is she.

As long as the base ingredients are the same, people are pretty open to trying new varieties, except stuffing. Stuffing must be cornbread stuffing, period. I'd like to try oyster stuffing, etc, but no. Everything else you can try other things, although everyone seems to be happiest when you make it the classical way.

  • We're going to H's grandparent's house and his grandmother will prepare everything. It's always the same menu. I'll ask if I can bring something to be polite but she always says no. I wish I could bring something.

  • I'm really bummed I'm not hosting this year. I love it. We mostly follow the same recipes every year, but sometimes we'll introduce a new one. We're going to my SIL's parents house this year, so I'm just making my famous caramel apple pie and bringing some wine.

  • It's only going to be me, DH and Wyatt for Thanksgiving.  Both of our families do not live nearby and it is really just too much to travel for a few days.  I do plan on making a full Thanksgiving day meal but I haven't picked out what recipes I plan to use.

  • Thanksgiving is a sore spot with me.  This is the 4th year we're spending Thanksgiving here and away from all family.  Every year has been different in every way.  Crying
  • Typically everyone brings a dish. It's a lot easier that way.

  • I'm excited for this year. My neighbors are hosting so I'm going to browse pinterest for some fun ideas. I'm thinking a dessert, an appetizer, and some sort of fancy holiday drink (<--that one will be my favorite, of course)

  • I am hosting both families this year. For sure I will be making the turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and creamy onions. I also might be making sweet potatoes, broccoli, cabbage w a bacon cream sauce, and cookies.  Other family members are bringing a few other things, mostly desserts. My DH wants to make pumpkin smoothies.
  • Let's just say I am unsure of what will be made at my home for Thanksgiving and in facebook language, "it's complicated." (ETA: the holiday, not my relationship status.)

  • Usually, it's at my mom's and we divvy everything up amongst 5 or so households.  This year, we're doing a much smaller scale.  I'll probably just make an app if anything at all.  I'll probably go to my mom's early and offer to help, although they probably won't let me.  This is all assuming, I don't have an outside baby yet.
  • I don't know which house we're going to.  I'm already feeling lazy so I'm going to try to make DH be on my side and just host it here.  I don't feel like driving.

My mom is in charge of turkey, ham, cranberry sauce, and rolls.

    Here's what i'm making: (i think i'm forgetting something)

Green Bean Casserole (traditions with cream of mushroom soup)
    Sweet potato casserole
    Pioneer Woman's Potatoes au Gratin
    Pecan Pie
    Caramel Apple Pie
    Possibly Pumpkin Bread Pudding

  • Our families make the same food every year too.  My mom and MIL cook up a storm so we're only responsible for a side dish (usually baked mac 'n cheese).
