tell me about your chiropractic experience

I am sick and tired of always having a headache. Lately my neck has hurt and I can't turn it to check my blind spot. (that's a problem) So I started seeing a chiropractor. Just wondered what you've experienced. You read online but all you get are the super faithfuls and those who say it's a load of crap. I want real-life experience stories. Please and thanks!

Re: tell me about your chiropractic experience

  • I love my chiropractor! I trust him and I think he's very ethical. It's commited to finding a treatment plan to get you back on track then working on correcting the issues you may have and then stepping down to maintence. He also gives me exercises to work on to streghten my weak areas. I suffer from sinus headached and hormone fuled migraines and he's been able to help a bit with those. He also does accupunture and I'm going to try that when my DH's new insurance kicks in.

I do think that you need to be careful with chiropractors and find someone that is right for you that you can trust. I once had a chiropractor run some sort of test on me at a bridal fair then tell me that the way my back was I was crushing the nerves to my vital organs and that I had various serious issues he needed to help me with ASAP. For the low low price of a 600 package....Huh?. I know my aunt see's someone she really likes and had really helped her with some issues she's been having for the past few years. She does suffer from headaches and I think he's helped her but she also takes meds and sees a dr for them as well. She's in Lincoln and I can get his name for you if you like!

I know it's made a difference for me. He even goes as far as to have me press on spots in my neck so I can feel where it is I'm getting so off track then he adjusts me and has me feel again so I can feel the difference. He had me go 3x / week for the first 3 weeks then 2 x a week for the next 3 weeks and now I'm down to every 2 weeks and then ever 3 weeks just 1x a week.

  • My only chiropractic experience is taking care of a 25 year old who had a catastrophic stroke from having a vertebral artery dissection (an artery that runs up your neck). The only risk factor we could determine (strokes are obviously uncommon in 25 year olds) was that he had had his neck "adjusted" immediately prior.

I'm not saying this chiropractor caused this young man to be unable to speak, eat, or move his arms/legs in a purposeful way, but suffice to say I would never go to a chiropractor after this. It was one of the saddest things I've had to deal with.

I am by no means opposed to alternative/complementary medicine in general. I hope you are feeling better asap.

  • I have had a lot of good luck with chiropractic and acupunture/acupressure combo. I think that there are some quacks out there, but there are also some very good chiropractors. I have a lot of problem with my upper back/shoulder and neck. I get really bad headaches when I'm out and there have been times that I have walked in there with a headache and within 30 seconds of getting adjusted I feel relief.

Like PP when I get really bad I usually have to go a couple of times a week and then step down. Your body is used to you being "out" and your muscles will try to pull it back out. Once you get used to being back "in" it will stay longer.

  • I have been going to the chiropractor for over 2 years. It keeps me sane. I have chronic back pain/scoliosis, so I am there at least once a week. It took me going to three different chiros before finding the one I am at now. Definitely ask around, because some are definitely crocks..but I DO believe it helps!

Ok, so my headache gets worse as the day goes on. I got adjusted for the first time today and I felt immediate relief. I wasn't sure if that was something I could expect or if that was kind of the placebo effect. Seriously - I had such a bad headache that I was starting to feel nauseous. I almost called to cancel and go home but I figured it was worth a try. I'm so glad I went.

I did read about the neck adjustments causing strokes. I've met with this gal twice now. She seems pretty gentle and was constantly asking about my comfort level. So far I'm happy with her and the staff. I'm willing to try it because I don't want to be pumping my body full of drugs, especially while breastfeeding. I'd rather treat the problem as opposed to masking it with pharmaceuticals if I can.

  • Did she say anything to you about using ice on your neck/shoulders at night (about 1- = 15 minutes)? That really helps me to keep the headaches in check too. I have a homemade (bought it at a craft fair years ago) ice bag that is flannel filled with cleaned corn. You can keep it in the freezer for a cold pack or zap it in the microwave for a heat pad. I thought about doing heat, but I had too much inflamation...the ice helps me much more!

I have RX muscle relaxers that I took for years and since I started going to the chiro again I have only taken one. I think that it really helps me.

She hasn't but she did talk about my responsibility which will include stretches and exercises. It may be coming up but I'll ask. Is this corn that I could just go out in the bin in my IL's yard and get me a couple hand fulls? ;-)

Thanks for the advice. The thought of muscle relaxers kind of scares me. Without reading or anything that just seems like it could easily cause something scary. I mean, your heart is a muscle. I don't really want that thing getting lazy on me.

  • I love my chiro!  She's helped me with some long standing back/neck problems.  My body was so used to being out of whack that it was hard to know what feeling good felt like.  I started seeing her when I was newly pregnant so she's been very gentle and easy with the treatment.  I can't wait to get on a better routine after the baby comes.

I think you just need to find someone reputable.  There are a lot of "doctors" out there that I wouldn't trust and it's unfortunate that they give alternate medicine a bad rep.

  • I swear by chiropractic care.  It has been the ONLY relief for my migraines.  No meds, no care under my GP etc helped.

I also swear by it for the girls.  If Berkeley starts to have accidents at night, I take her in and she is out of line.  She gets adjusted and we stop having accidents.

  • I have had neck probs since having kids and it has helped tremendously with headaches and just general pain.  I only go as needed, but for a while, I went 3 times a week.  The nay sayers only say that because chiros typically need you to keep coming in to see results.  But I have weaned myself to only go when needed.  I took B when he was a baby to help with reflux and probably didn't give it enough time, but I didn't see any immediate results.  Some people swear by it all, I just like that it helps when I need it!
  • I've been seeing chiropractors off and on since high school. The first one I saw really was a quack. He did Xrays, showed me what was wrong and then told me that I would always be in pain if I didn't have constant chiropractic care. I went to him - because I didn't know any better - and he'd adjust me. I'd feel better for a day or two, and then start hurting again. After 3 years, I finally said screw it and decided to just live with the pain.

Then, I threw my back out 2 years ago during conferences. I got a recommendation for a chiropractor in CB that incorporates traction and a machine called the Power Plate (pro football players use this for strengthening weak muscles/joints). It took 5 months of going 3 times a week, but when we re-Xrayed, my spine has moved to a more "normal" position. I can now sit in low chairs (which, teaching PreK, I obviously do) for longer than 10 minutes without hurting. I saw him through pregnancy every other week and he kept me feeling decent. I do have problems with my neck - he said he would do a treatment plan for it if I wanted, but I don't really have time right now and adjustments once a month or so keep me from getting headaches (and one adjustment gets rid of it completely) - but my low back is great!

I've thought about taking B to see if it would help his reflux and get him off the Zantac. But, DH is leery of letting him adjust a (almost) 5 month old. He's seen how Dr. Dan helped me, but he's just an over-cautious daddy.

So, anyways... My point: find someone you trust and make sure they Xray to see WHERE the problem actually lies. And if she gives you exercises, do them!
