Book recommendation please...
Hi,
I'm trying to put an amazon order together and want the free supersaver shipping... but I need more books to get it! (yes, I know, spending more to save on delivery doesn't really make sense... but there you have it!)
So far I have The Sisters Brothers (Patrick deWitt), The Fifth Witness (Michael Connolly) and The Sixth Man (David Baldacci)...
Anyone? I'd say 2 more would do it... we are always running out of books to read in our house!! (DH has Stephen Hawkins book by his bed at the moment as he has nothing else to read...)
Re: Book recommendation please...
I love this...I'm totally putting my degree in Library Science to use!
Here are a few of my favorites from the past couple of months:
Just Kids by Patti Smith
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons
Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran
I can also highly recommend this book as well. I loved it! Little Red, are you on GoodReads??
No
But I do have a page on my blog where I keep track of all the books I read. It's really helpful when people ask for recs . . . or when I can't remember if I've read something!
I've got quiet a varied reading history... from the Bronte sisters, Thomas Hardy, Tom Clancy, Michael Connolly (though the Fifth Witness is the only one I haven't read), soppy girly books, Ben Elton, Irvine Welsh, Bryce Courtenay... I'll read quite a variety (though my brain has just gone to mush and can't think now that you've put me on the spot!) and will try most things... though I don't like Jane Austin! Or Paulo Cuelo... too many adjectives for my liking... (if it's wet out, say it's wet out rather than "it was a cold, damp, dreary, miserable, misty and grey day...")
I like books that are about people rather than about things/places if that makes sense. For example, I read the Forsyte Saga (yes, all 3 parts) and enjoyed it because it was about the relationships and about how people interacted and affected by the social mores of the time. That to me is better than reading about Victorian England in general...
I'm looking for something new or a new author that could well be out of my comfort zone but it has to be in soft cover (I've fallen asleep often enough with a book in my hand to read hardbacks in bed!! :-) )
This could be exciting like having a surprise dinner!
I just read The Paris Wife by Paula McLain--it's a fictional story about Earnest Hemingway. I thought it was really interesting--the kind of book that makes you want to read his novels to put it together with a place in his life.
ETA: A few of us are on goodreads.com which is great for suggestions because you can see what we're reading and how we ranked the books.
My favourite author is Penny Vincenzi. I love her Celia Lytton trilogy, the first book is No Angel, followed by Something Dangerous and then Into Temptation. I think its called the Spoils of our Time Trilogy.

Thanks everyone!
I added The Constant Princess (Phillipa Gregory) and The Paris Wife to my list! Looking forward to getting my book parcel next week...
(though this lot will take me til well after Christmas to read!!!)
