Turn Off the Lights, Norway!

Just some silliness for an otherwise routine Tuesday.

I'm watching a news story on an argument between Norway and Finland over "ownership" of the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights.

I was wondering if it was getting more coverage in Scandinavia and what's a non-native take on the argument.  And what happens if other countries like Canada, the US, Russia, and Iceland get in on the battle?

Re: Turn Off the Lights, Norway!

  • Uh...ownership?  I've heard of Norway and Finland each claiming "where Santa Claus lives".  So apparently they like to fight over ridiculous sh!t.

I'll pay attention to the news and see if it's mentioned at all.

  • I haven't seen anything in the newspapers about Finland and Norway arguing over the northern lights.  It wouldn't surprise me though.  There was some squabbling earlier this year over which Norwegian city "owned" the northern lights...
  • lol.  Seriously?  We all know the US owns it.
  • I don't think it's getting any coverage in Denmark. It sounds like a filler story.

  • Ohh, it was definitely a filler story.  But it was one of the better filler stories I've seen.

According to the news report, it all started with the Finnish tourism board's YouTube video, proclaiming Finnish Lapland as the Home of the Northern Lights.  Norway contested that claim, and a bit of a national pride disagreement has resulted.  Norway asked Finland to pull the language; Finland declined; and Norway now has its own Home of the Northern Lights tourism board commercial.

  • Somehow I don't think Canada has the personality to pull off a "nu-uh, they're ours" campaign, but it would be hilarious. :)
