Talk to me about yoga and Pilates
There are like a billion different kinds, right?
If you do yoga or Pilates, will you please tell me about it?
I am thinking about trying a class, but I would be a 110% newbie and need an introduction!
Thank youuu

Re: Talk to me about yoga and Pilates
I started doing yoga after I went to a physical therapist for my knee.
I have never taken a class (but it is highly recommended so they can show you proper form). The videos I do are more stretching my hip flexors and all the other muscles that were causing my knee/hip pains during my marathon/training last year.
I only had to see the PT once, because the stretching in my video has totally helped my knee/hip.
I do the P90x yoga sometimes, but it is more strength (I think) and it is extremely intense and an hour and half long, which make a very long, strenuous work out for me. I would rather just run for an hour and a half. HAH!
I have never done pilates.
They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
Okay so maybe I'll only have to pay for 5 or 10 classes, then I can get some videos and do it at home?
Is it just as relaxing at home by yourself?
Yeah, I would recommend taking a few classes and then going to Half Price books and buying DVDs or something.
I don't do it for the meditation and the OOOMMMMSSSSSS, I get really bored, so I just do it up until that part. I don't really *like* doing it, but I do it because it helps me knee/hip.
The P90x one is not relaxing, IMO, but the other one is, I guess. I have to do it at Mr. Kyk's house because I don't have a TV (or a computer), neither does he, but he has a computer, so I just pop the DVD in his computer.
They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
I do yoga about 4-5 days a week... I really enjoy it, it's nice change from weights and running. Plus, it helps calm my mind which likes to run at a hundred miles an hour. I would find a studio that has beginner classes or maybe find a groupon that offers unlimited yoga for a month at a cheap rate. I'm at a studio now that's all hot yoga and I LOVE it! That way if you decide you hate it, you haven't wasted a lot of time.
I enjoy classes over doing it at home because I like the energy that flows during these classes and the OMs... but that's definitely a personal practice. There are also different types of yoga, some more challenging or relaxing depending on your mood.
I have found a place a few blocks from my house that offers 6 session for $90 (I live in a very high COL place, but I still don't know if that's a good price, really).
They offer a Saturday morning class specifically for new people, so maybe I will just get the 6-class package and go to that one.
I don't really know if yoga is going to be for me, though, since I keep LOLing at the way they describe these classes, haha...
That cost is ok... yoga is fairly expensive, which I still haven't yet figured out why which is why I try to do the groupon thing as much as possible. The place where I'm doing hot yoga is $108/month for unlimited classes, but I still can't justify paying that per month, I have a groupon for it right now.
let us know what you think since you've never tried it before!
LOL!!!

I get giggly when people take Yoga so seriously, I don't know why. I do PiYo-it's a pilates Yoga mix and I love it! It's faster paced so you get cardio, but uses Yoga/Pilates moves so you get the core exercise, strength building, and stretching. I only go twice a week and do an abs class here and there and the difference in my body is amazing.
Yeah, well I wouldn't be doing it to get or stay in shape. I would be doing it to try to help me relax, ha. Anxiety kind of runs in my family, and I can be a little high-strung, so I was trying to think of some way to force myself to have an hour or so of peaceful time once a week or whatever.
But I'm afraid that the "zen" part of it all is going to make me LOL, haha. We'll see.
Oh, then I retract my statement. Although, working out in general tends to "centers" me, lol.
No prob! And I agree that exercise is a great mind-clearer. I keep up with my running, so I feel good in that department. But running makes me feel energized, not necessarily relaxed. So I just feel like I need a counter to that, ha. We'll see....
